Why is it that people will ask for advice, then ignore what you tell them. Just boggles my mind. Have a friend who just bought a new, to him, boat. Helped him bring it back from Panama City a couple weeks ago. He has very limited experience, almost none. He was headed across Ponchatrain from my house yesterday, headed over to Mandeville. One of the things I told him was to stay well off of Goose point. It gets shallow pretty quick, and the charts are more than a little outdated, and not very accurate. So guess what. He cut the corner, and ran aground hard. This is the second person who I have given this same information to, and the other one ran aground in there too. Do you ask for advice and then ignore it.

Maybe he thought

He was far enough out and was not cutting the corner. You yourself said he has "no" experience.

curiousity

Sometimes curiosity gets the best of people.

you know those plastic card keys that they make to open up your car door if you've left your keys in it? They always say not to use it for the ignition because it will melt. A friend of mine did just that. He was curious to see what would happen. And, yes, it melted and he had to replace the ignition switch.

The sense is that wise folks learn as well from teachers' precepts, from reading, or from observation --- but fools learn only when they have been thumped by rude experience. That's the price they pay.

A wise man learns from his mistakes

A wiser man learns from others' mistakes.

Another one I like:

We start with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill up the experience bag before completely emptying the luck bag.

Too far away to hear me

tell them they shouldn't oughta be there. Red right returning and all that. This boat came up the Napa River during the higher high tide and got stuck. This picture is at the lower high tide. The next higher high tide will be in the middle of the night and won't be as high as last night so not sure if I'll be seeing him again tomorrow.

This section has caught a few this past year. Three years ago the flybridge on this boat would have been buried in a field. The river was terraced for passive flood control on the far side. Twice a day the mud shows, twice a day the river looks real wide so why not cut the corner?
