This is for all center cockpit owners. We have a 1997 P42. For three summers we have been using two hands to steer. Wheel very hard to turn and we just attributed that to the fact that the boat was a center cockpit and the cable had to run a long way around lots of resistence. It was just a fact of life, we thought. At the Annapolis show, we were on the 460 and were amazed at how easy it was to turn the wheel. Attributed that to the fact that the wheel is right over the rudder.Anyway, for some reason two weeks ago, I sparyed dry teflon lubricant on the steering cable while my son slowly turned the wheel back and forth. Sprayed it at four access points. Under the aft bed on both sides and in the engine room as it leave the pedistal and goes into the conduit. There is about a 1 inch gap there where you have access to the cable. The cable runs through plastic conduit which creates lots of friction. You wouldn't believe the difference this has made. I can now steer with one finger, just like the 460 and just like our old H37C. It is great. A world of difference. I just wish I had thought of this three years ago.
