Why cooling sea water to muffler?

Water recently backed up into the engine via the salt water return from the heat exchanger. The pipe from the exhaust manifold was rusted and had holes in it. I guessed that the exhaust was not able to clear the water out of the aqua lift muffler. What is the reason that the water is injected into the exhaust system in the first place? Why can't it be directed out through a through hull? The exhaust pipe doesn't seem to get so hot that I can't touch it. Any comments?

Hi, Maybe it's just me but I don't really understand your question and since you've had no responses I wonder if I'm not alone! BUT, we had trouble with our Aqua Filter when we got our 1988, 4 years ago and had to replace it because it had a nice crack in it and leaked a fair amount of water each time we went out. We finally figured out what was going on and even after a hearty repair it still needed to be replaced. If this seems helpful at all let me know and we can give you more info about it. Catalina Direct made the new muffler specifically for us, and we did modify it a little.....everything just great now!

That's because it's a water cooled exhaust. No cooling water can equal = boat fire..

If you want to install a dry stack exhaust like a lobster boat you'll have a big hole in your cabin and will be quite the site to see..

I am a new owner less than a year and had to have our engine rebuilt on our 1977 30 and I also asked that question. The mechanic told me the boat is made of fiberglass and wood. The exahust from the engine if not cooled by saltwater (fresh if you were in a lake) would melt the fiberglass and could cause a fire as the exhaust tube runs a qtr lenght through the boat. That made sense to me. Hope this helps.
