Darn it. I have a hair line crack in the fibreglass at the aft end of the lead ballast keel at my hull joint. It's 6"inches long. The boat (1979- Oday sloop) is on the hard right now. The boat has been in fresh water for the last 7 years. Does anyone have recommendations for repairs and are they costly?

Hope to hear from you soon,

James

I repaired one on an Oday 28 last year with the same crack. Someone before had wadded up 5200 and shoved it in there, and it looked like Fido's ass. We simply ground this mess back out and patched it with a little glass and epoxy. It was a non-event. Simple, cheap, quick.

I don't want to start a new thread so I would like to jump in on this one. My C-27 has developed a hairline crack at the back of the keel joint about 3-4" long. It is weeping water after a sail. I have a few questions.'
How far in did you have to grind it? You mentioned fiber glass, cloth shredded or balloons?
After the repair what happens to the water left below the glass?
Does it need to be drilled out so it can drain and dry?

The tops of the keel studs and nuts look sound but there is no way to tell what is napping below the bilge area.
C-27 keels are made of lead. I can post pictures soon.
Should I be asking this in the Catalina forum?

Frank, it was not ground out much at all, as it wasn't leaking, and nothing structural appeared to be abnormal. Although it was not me personally that held the grinder, it was on me to see it done. So I told the man to just cut it out good, don't spend all day on it, and we have these rolls of glass in the shop that is neat. I don't remember the name of it right offhand, but it comes in rolls of course, about 6 inches wide, and has woven roving on one side, and a tight cross cloth on the other. Wonderful stuff, we use it a lot. You do not have to alternate different glass types with this stuff, just wet it, and stick it.
Like I said, I remember clearly inspecting the thing, but the repair details are not as clear in my mind, simply because it was just a patch more or less, three, four layers, whiz-bang..

It is called biaxial cloth - stitched (not woven) roving with epoxy compatible mat on one side.

I'll take some pictures tonight. I have a friend who buys Catalina's for their scrap lead. H has shown me some keel bolts that were really scary looking. They were literally half missing. Including the nuts. My nuts look ok as do the exposed bolts. It's what's hidden below the surface in the oxygen depleted zone that worries me. It just seems logical to me that the crack should be drilled out and allowed to drain, or am I just over thinking this. We don't get freezing weather here in CA so that is not an issue. I will check the bolts this evening with a magnet to see if they are stainless. I realize that in the dark unknown being stainless would not prevent corrosion. But I would feel a little better.
Thanks for the glass tip.

Stainless is the material that suffers from crevice corrosion - damp without oxygen being the cause. Steel will slowly rust but not suffer crevice corrosion.

This is a stainless keel bolt and the crevice corrosion it suffered. The part that was visible in the bilge looks fine, but the section buried not so good.

Joe, Do you know how much they want for their kit?

Mitiempo, do you know how long it take for that kind of corrosion? The crack has been there less than a year. The patch in front of the current crack, was the first attempt last year. The current weeping crack showed up last month. I first noticed the front crack this evening but it is not leaking.

No I don't, but you have to wonder how long the ss has been damp.
