Who uses seizing wire on their Anchor shackles? How many wraps do you put through the eye? Has anyone has a shackle fail or come unscrewed?

Never had one come loose. Use same on permenant mooring. Also no problems. No elecrolytic reaction with nylon, unlike monel or stainless for seizing.

Watched the boat floating off one day. The "now-ex" said it was okay. The more I watched, the more I worried. Swam back over to catch up and guess what??????? Pulled up the rode and the shackle but no anchor or clevis pin. Taught me a lesson. Have never lost an anchor since. Learned my lesson---don't listen to your wife-----teehheeteehee

Walt Wire or cable ties, your choice, but DO IT. There's a REASON it is suggested. One thing to remember: on a reasonably regular basis, DISCONNECT the tie(s), unscrew the pin from the shackle, put some lanocote on it, so that you CAN take it apart if you ever need to, like cleaning your line and storing it for winter!!!

Just watch the sun
Wire ties will eventually dry out and become brittle after a few months in the sun. They can easily fall off, so check on them every once in a while.

Hi, Walt. We keep the anchor shackle pin wired, as well as a number of other shackle pins around the boat. We learned that lesson one day when the pin in the mainsheet shackle at the boom bale backed out on us. That was fun! Immediately thereafter we went around the boat and wired every shackle pin that we didn't want backing out at the wrong time. We use two turns and then twist it off. Be careful to fold over the twisted end so it can't snag something; not an issue on the anchor, but it is in other places. Using cable ties is probably a reasonable alternative to seizing wire. Use black; more weather-resistant, and check frequently to make certain they aren't stretching. Carl and Jule s/v 'Syzygy'

Had the mainsheet to travler shackle let go on my boat once, and dropped the dinghy this summer when the shackle holding block I was towing with backed out. Now everything is siezed. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

I use .041" aircraft safety wire and a pair of wire twisting pliers made for aircraft mechanics but widely available. A vise grip will do the job nicely. The wire can be purchased from West marine among others. Make two turns through the eye of the pin, then a twisted section, then two turns around the body of the shackle then another twisted section, cut the twisted wire off and bend the end out of harm's way.

So I was not just wasting my time yesterday. We had a dense fog so I seized my anchor shackles while at the slip. I got some wire from Marine West and put at lease three loupes around the pin and shackle. I learned to check all my other pins when the wire “ring” came out on one lower stay. I think I will switch to all cotter pins instead of rings. Thanks again Walt
