who's the best best outboard maker?

Hi all.
My 80's model 6HP Johnson outboard sucks. OK, it starts and runs but
it doesn't have a charger and I generally don't trust it. Therefore it
is time to buy a new one. My requirements are:
1. Reasonably priced. 2. Must charge a battery. 3. Must be reliable.
4. Needs as long a shaft as possible. (I have no inboard so...)

What can folks recommend? I'm leaning towards a 4 stroke.
Honda? Mercury? Evinrude? Johnson? Who has the best prices? Who has
the best service? What are people's experiences with the different
makers? I'm sure this will be a lively topic. Discuss! :)
Many thanks,
Andy

Hi Andy

Bite the bullet and buy an inboard, you wont be disappointed. Vast choice
ranging from Beta - Westerbeke

Sell some more paintings (They are very good by the way).

Any of the main contenders for outboards. About 10hp would be good with as
long a shaft as possible. Quite a few use teh same basic engine and then
just badge the finished outboard. Must decide whether to use 2 or 4 stroke
as well.

Hi Andy,
On a similar sized boat to the Vega I had a newer Yamaha 9.9 high
thrust 4 stroke long shaft electric start with alternator. It was a
very good and powerful unit that moved the boat at 5 knots on 1/4
throttle. The two cylinder 4 stroke was very quiet, and economical on
gas. If you're going the outboard route I highly reccomend it.

You might also check to see if higher horsepower models of a particular
make motor have the same weight, as some manufacturers use similar
components on several models, increasing displacement, compression, and
fuel delivery systems to increase horesepower. An example of this is
the Yamaha 8 and the 9.9 ... they both weigh the same.

One of the disadvantages to having an outboard is the prop is prone to
come of the water while motoring in heavy seas.

Peter.
