I looked at a boat at Whitney's Marine in Jacksonville. There were a few things regarding the broker that struck me as unusual. I don't want to deal with anything less than a very reputable broker. Not worth the hassle. So I'm looking for feedback on Whitney's.

I've been told that Whitney's management changed, anyone care to shed any light on this?

Whitney’s was sold by the owner to Jacksonville yachts sales. one of there best sales persons is also no longer working there. They are a power boat yachts seller and picked up the hunter line since they bought Whitney’s. I can tell you that there is a very good fl dealer Massey. they were at the Miami boat show and have some of the best prices I have seen. take a look there....

have looked

I am looking at used boats so you can't make a direct comparison between brokers because the boats, even tho they may be the same model and same year, are not the 'same' boat.

Your instincts are right, the brokers with ny asailing and real sailboat knowledge have all left since the powerboat owners took over. About 40% of the slips are empty (used to have a waiting list)because sailors are leaving, too. Seems like they are being slowly driven out to make room for more powerboats, and maybe that is the best market for the new owners. The best broker they had was Linda Reynolds and she can be reached at 904-759-2413 at St. Augustine Sailing Enterprises. She sold me a boat over 12 years ago (I still have it) and I know she was a 10 year liveaboard on an Island Packet and is great at matching the customer to the right boat and budget. She will steer you away from the wrong boat, too. Good Luck in your search.

status of Whitney's

I am one of the owners or Whitney's (now St. Johns Yacht Centre). Ted, I am truly sorry that you apparently had a "less than perfect" experience in our dealership. I would very much like to speak with you directly about your experience so that we might take corrective actions. Please call me directly at (904) 334-8909 anytime. As for the status of Whitney's (SJYC), we are "alive and well". Yes, most of our prior experience has been in the powerboat business (with Jacksonville Yacht Sales selling Luhrs, Carolina Classic, Pursuit, and formerly Mainship). Because of our inexperience with sailboats, I am sure that we have made a few mis-steps... The boats are certainly different, and there are some differences in the business climate, as well. Be that as it may, we ARE IN THE SAILBOAT BUSINESS, and plan to continue to be... We welcome all of you to visit our facility. We are a "full line demo center" dealer with Hunter and have most models in stock at any given time, with many commissioned and available for demonstration. Yes, we also sell powerboats in the same facility. When we bought Whitney's, we bought the dealership AND the marina facility. We DID NOT have experience running a marina. I think we have not been successful in creating the warm and customer-friendly environment in the marina that we had hoped for. That is largely due to our inexperience and the distractions of running boat dealerships in these weak market times. We recently took action to correct that. We sold the marina facilities to an experienced marina operator. The operating change-over in occurring right now and I believe that users of the facility will note positive changes in the immediate future. We welcome all to visit our dealership! Please stop in... THANKS Ernie Snuggs
