Smoke or steam? White usually means water is getting into the cylinder. Most likely from a failed head gasket.

White smoke sounds like steam. Put you hand in it. Is it wet or oily? If wet, could be diminished raw water flow.

In my experience, white SMOKE on startup is unburned diesel from cold cylinders. My 1980 Westerbeke 50 does this every startup then it smooths out as it starts firing on all cylinders and the white goes away.

Several years ago, I had my injection pump overhauled. When we re-installed it to the marks I scribed on removal, the engine smoked all the time. for hours and hours. Talked to a diesel mechanic and he says the timing is off. For the next hour and a half, he would rotate the injection pump to change the timing, I would start the engine and report back. Rinse, repeat until it was back to normal diesel exhaust. Cost me a 6 pack but I would have paid more. 12 pack.
