I have been looking at whisker poles for my OD 28 to pole out the 155 jib and the cruising chute. Mercy! The price of those simple aluminum tubes are out of sight. Does anyone out there know of a source for these things used and why the he!! are they so expensive to begin with?

We'll they're simple and you could make your own. Buy aluminum tube at McMaster-Carr, or buy a good used one from a marine thrift/consignment store. Just some thoughts.

Whisker Pole

I've often thought of making my own whisker Pole out of a 12' telescopic boat pole. All you would need is the extrusions which could be made at home. There's no way in heck that I'd pay the kind of money that these boat outlets are asking for these Whisker Poles. In fact, I've actually taken my own boat pole, tied it to the mast and used it for a Whisker Pole on a couple of occasions. Chuck R. on this forum bought some Bronze extrusions for reasonable money in a marine consignment or yard sale somewhere, and had an old German cabinet maker in Toledo turn out a pole on his lathe using Sassafras wood. Chuck finished it and put it together, and it came out like a beautiful piece of furniture. I don't know why the "Sure-Hold" people haven't come out with whisker pole extrusions. They have everything else including crab net, fish gaff, boat hook, fish net, and brush attachments. Hint, hint, hint. Joe

Ya gotta be quick

I'm in the market for a whisker pole the same as you are, and I've tried the pre-owned route to avoid the outrageous cost of a new one. What I've been told by a few people is you simply have to be quick if you spot a used one for sale -- they tend to get snapped up almost immediately. I guess there are quite a lot of us out there looking for the same thing. Good luck to us all. Pete s/v EmmieLou (O-322) Little Silver, NJ

do a google search...

I have seen numerous articles online for building your own whisker pole. In fact, when my pool brush handle bit the big one, I saved it for just this project. It should work like a charm. Just my 2 cents. Ross in Tampa

I googled around the internet looking for a self-build instructional on a whisker pole. No luck. Can you lead me to such a site?

I will find it for you and post a link.

Also, one of the recent issues of "Boatworks" magazine had an article about it too with pictures and everything.

Poles

A whisker pole would bend like a pretzel in any blow. Forespar makes versitile spinnaker poles which work fine. The prices have doubled in the last few years because of the price of Aluminum for extruding. There is a used marine products place somewhere around St. Pete, Fla. It has a web site but I do not have it available. Shipping cost would be out of site. Put up a pole wanted sign at your marina. Ed K 26
