Anyone out ther using a whisker pole on their H240. Looking for a way to pick up a little off wind performance. I have a cruising spinaker, but will be doing local club races in the non spinaker class. If you added one did you notice an increase in performance? What was the length? Was it telescoping or a fixed one? I'm considering a telescoping just for ease of storage.

Whisker Pole Length

There's an posting on the Hunter Racing forum right now that discusses pole length. Check it out. It might be useful. Tony

Pole out the Jib

I race my 88 h23 and find that any time I pole out the jib going down wind my performance improves. Many times we go wing and wing, release the outhaul, and pole the jib. By steadying the jib we keep the sail from luffing and flopping around which makes it easier for the wind to fill the sail, particularly of those light air days. Highly recommend using a pole. The one I have is the 1 1/4" Forspar telescoping pole. I removed the spike on one end and replaced it with the jaw type used on the mast end. Attached a line to run between to two jaw pins so you can just pull on the line to release each end. The length on the line is equal to the J measurement on the boat making it easy to telescope the pole until the line is tight then just grab the sheet, attach the pole, push it out and snap the other end onto the mast ring. "Made" and away you go. Ain't this fun. I love beating up on the larger boats in our club that race in the jib and main only class.

Same as Darrell

I have the same set up as Darrell, with a telescoping pole. I have a 3 inch loop of line on the Clew of the jib to make attaching the jib end of the pole easier. I also race a Tanzer 16 with a whisker pole and no spinnaker. If the spinnaker boats make any mistakes with the chute, we can beat them. We can also sail a straighter line to the leeward mark than a boat that has to go wide to starboard to keep the chute full.

Thanks

Thanks for the responses. Looks like I'll be making a trip to Boat US after I pick my boat back up from that crazy guy (I think his name is Dave)

Use the spinnaker pole?

Why can't you just use the spinnaker pole as a whisker pole?
