I have a 1998 H340, it was moved by truck from San Francisco to Kelowna BC, Canada There is now a whining noise coming from the strut under power around 2,000 rpm's in forward gear only. No vibration just this whining noise that sounds like a belt slipping. I checked all the belts, transmission fluid and engine alignment. We used a stethoscope on the strut bolts and the noise is the loudest at that point. Any suggestions?

My yanmar ysm 12 made the same noise at low rpm a went away as i throttled up. Didn't think anything of it until i lost total power in a bad crosswind 200 yards from shore. Turned out to be a shaft coupler. The yard showed me the old part and it was scored badly until it cracked. If i hadn't been able to grab a nearby mooring( the last one) in 2 more minutes I would have been in someones back yard. Check it out. Pray for Wind, Lugeman

How long has she been in the water?
Being on the hard or getting shipped over land can cause the hull to warp a bit. This is why you don't install an engine in a boat on the hard but have to wait at least a week after putting her in the water so the hull can un-warp.

Hi Bill, The boat has been in the water since last October, we noticed the sound right away when we took it out for a short cruise. Is it possible that something needs lubricating? Ithas gone from salt water to fresh water. Ken

Cutlass bearing?
Hi Ken, Have you checked the cutlass bearing lately? It's basically a sleeve that supports the prop shaft where it runs through the strut. If the noise seems to be coming from the strut it may be that the bearing is worn or binding somehow. Not good for the prop shaft... It's easy to check on land by seeing if the prop and shaft has any movement where it goes through the strut. Trickier in the water but a diver might be able to take a look for you.

Ken, From prior experience and from knowing the guys at the prop shop, your noise problem is your propeller. Don't listen to all the lame explainations about this or that. The prop will need to be professionally balanced (very similiar to how your car tires are balanced). The prop shop guys use computer-aided equipment to set the proper pitch and will "cut" the leading edge of the prop so it doesn't "sing" for you. Have a professional diver pull the prop or have it down in the yard. Check around for a marine prop shop in your area and have the work done correctly. You'll be happy you did. Noise very rarely comes from any other sources.

propeller balance
Hi Ron, I thank you very much for pointing this out. This seems to make sense, the engine and shaft alignment is fine. I know last fall when I was cleaning the propeller off,the shaft didn't have any play in it at all. This would rule out the cutless bearing. I really appreciate your input. Ken
