Which yacht to buy

After visiting the Sydney Boat Show with a view to upgrading to a bigger yacht we really fell in love with the Hunter yachts 41 and 44. But unfortunately quite a few people have been very critical of strength, quality lack of back stays etc. We are wanting to do some more serious cruising (mainly around Queensland) and feel our 2002 Jeanneau 34.2 Sun Odyssey may be too small. Any comments??

First thoughts

What are you going to do with the boat? Tha will help us focus our responses. On the strength issue, we have to trust the designer nd production folks as always. But there is no history of hull strength problems on earlier models on this site. The B&R rig (without a backstay) is engineered to be as strong as a rig with a backstay. Again, we have no history to the contrary. To be honest, the remarks you mention seem like competitive scare tactics to me. David Lady Lillie

Second thoughts

You are more likely to find them in nice, safe charter-boat waters than events like this...the Beneteaus were well represented, however, with three finishes out of seven entrants. Swans seem to be the other production boat entered.

John, a Swan a production boat?

I thought the hull and rig was the only start-point of a Swan. Isn't the rest of boat pretty much custom? They aren't built unless they are first sold, aren't they? Not exactly production. But I could be wrong. What do I know? I drive a Chevy and a Hunter. :) Oh, I think the original thread is an incomplete composition. He looks like he pushed the send button in error.

Hunter 41

We went to the Annapolis Boat Show to look specifically at the new 38, as we saw the preliminary pictures and read all the hype about it. We were somewhat disappointed in the boat. The new color scheme just didn't do it for us. However, Hunter had the new 41DS and in a blue hull. Beautiful inside and out. We were so bitten by the bug that we traded our 340 and took delivery of it the last weekend in October. Cannot wait until our weather here is better for a good long shake down run.

Having the nav station on one side or the other doesn't make them a one-off in my book. But I can agree with that, Swan is not a good example of a production boat, unless its in a race with Maxi 96's and such.
