Hi!

Been looking at Windex indicators. Not sure which one is best for my boat.

Which model would you folks recommend for a 22-foot Mac?

Those of you with 22 or 25 footers: what kind of mast-top wind indicator are you using and how do you like it?

Mahalo!

I have the Davis sport 10 model, modified the arm so I could mount it off to the side of the mast to clear the antenna and masthead light. Plenty big for this size boat.

Mine is the 15 inch model cuz it is way up there.

My mast didn't have a top so I whittled a 1 inch board to fit inside and mounted a thin plate to mount the indicator on and to set it back to clear the antena, seems to make it easier to see too.

If you have an antenna on top of the mast, get the "AV" model Windex by Davis:

It eliminates the need of "getting it out of the way" of the antenna or mast light.
Thanks, we will get that one. I kind of partially broke the one we had , but it still works when we remember to put it on , but we are moving the VHF antenna up there and this will be a good deal,

The larger one seems oversize for a 22, ymmv, my eyes aren't that bad yet. :D I looked at the antenna mounted one when my base bracket broke, (my fault, whacked it with a rake handle) but since the windex and antenna have to come off for trailering, the smaller one was a better option because the arms would have to be repositioned every time, and there would be more chance of bending or breaking something. This is a bad pic of my bracket, it is attached to the other side of the mast and sticks out far enough to be in clear air. The antenna mount is on this side and I put a 90deg bend in the windex arm.

Here's the rigging that the PO put on Soire'e. We leave it on for trailering, but tie a piece of line around the indicator to keep it from windmilling. It's the same one Mike B1026 lists in his post. Not cheap, but worth it.

Trailering

Actually, the arms stay in place when trailering. I just unscrew the small nut that holds the actual whip to the antenna base. The rest of the windex stays in place. It just takes a second to take the whip off.

A rake handle? My 22 didn't come with one of those. Suppose I could get one from Northern Tool? No wait, nevermind. They don't ship to Hawaii anyhow.

Sum - Type of antenna?

Sum, what type of antenna? I just wanted to mention an error in the instructions of the AV Windex unit.

I have a Metz brand antenna which seems to be a popular brand. (The USCG uses them as well) They just sent me a new unit because the old one (came with my '92 boat) had some UV damage on the plastic top. Anyway, Metz uses a very short (standard) connector (like what you might use to splice two VHF coaxial cables) I called Metz and the lady admitted there weren't may threads holding it on but it would work. In my opinion there isn't enough threads on it, even to use on the stock bracket. (only two threads are holding it to the bracket). It definitely won't work with the AV Windex unit. (even though the Windex instructions shows it to. (maybe it was an older model?) I had to buy an all threaded stainless connector, the same type that goes through my cabin top to connect my inside coax cable to the mast coax.

Send me a plane ticket, I'll bring the rake. You sure about Northern tool? They say they ship worldwide.

Nyerk-Nyerk! Yeah, like I can afford air fare! We're fixing a boat here, ya know!!! :)

But, AAARRRGGGHHH!!! Man, I'm sure: it was an eBay auction; the seller was Northern Tool; searched their eBay store and found the same ads for brake winches; and the shipping instructions plainly said they did not ship to Hawaii!!! That's the only reason I spent the money to buy a 12-volt winch here in town!

However: silver linings and all that...I just checked their site and it does say they ship all over the World. So, COOL! I'll buy the mechanical winch, install it at the keel, and use the 12-volt gadget to motorize my mast-stepping procedure!

Thanks for the heads-up! All Good!

VBR,

Pat
