Life caulk works for me. I could not keep butyl from squeezing out over time. Life caulk is not a strong adhesive so it can be removed without damage to your deck. The problem with stanchions is docking helpers grab them to muscle in a boat damaging the base seal. Every launch operator does the same. Butyl might reseal better after retightening the fasteners. No perfect solution.
