Which outboard

I have 2 outboards that came with my boat. A 5hp Honda BF5A 4 stroke, and a Evinrude 15hp 2 stroke E15RCCS.

Dancer is a 22' with a outboard well to place the motor. I'm in the process of cleaning and checking out both motors to see how they run. Although she was previously sailed in the coastal waters, for the near future will be sailed on the local lakes.

Some of things I was considering:

5 vs 15, bigger is better (or not really)

Honda is a 4 stroke, so no messing with mixing oil and gas.

Which engine is more reliable

Appreciate your input.

Both are good engines. I would go with the Honda 5 .. much quieter on the boat and has plenty power (with the correct propeller) to do anything ya need.. I have had 2 strokes and 4 strokes and the four stroke engines (all Hondas) were great.

The 5 hp will get much better mileage than a 15hp 2 stroke. Also, the 5 hp might fit in your motor well. A 15 hp? I dunno.

Nobody on our lake runs a 15 on a 22' boat. Then again, it's rare for us to fight wind, and never current.

As Kloudie implied, you're going to want to put a high thrust prop on the 5 hp for best results.

Looks like I will keep the Honda and sell off the other. How can I tell which prop I have vs a "high thrust" prop. On a side note, there is currently no fuel tanks, portable or other on this boat. There is a Oval galvanized port, maybe 4" by 2" with a hinged lid on the stern, with a compartment under. I will need to do something for a tank.

I ran a 5 HP Honda on our C-22,(Wing Keeled MK-II, 3,600#) for several years, motoring at 5.5-6 MPH gave us slightly over 20 MPG with the standard prop. Might want to think twice about the money for the high thrust prop unless your boat is heavier than ours. Was a nice motor but ultimately, sold it and bought a Tohatsu.

I use an 8 hp 4 stroke on my boat- which cruises at about 7800 pounds, loaded displacement. I usually have hull speed at half throttle. I use a standard prop. The only real advantage you'd get with a power prop would be a stronger reverse. Not really worth it

In my opinion, the 15 would be overkill, both in HP and weight

Try using both of them and see which one you like best. 5 HP is sufficient for most situations, but the 15 HP one may run at a lower RPM and be quieter.

Overall weight for handling and reliability will help direct your final answer.

Hello cudamank,
RE: the fuel tank I don't think I would be too concerned about having an external fuel tank for a 5 Hp engine. Carrying a small (1 to 2.5 gal) extra fuel jug would give you plenty of extra fuel if the internal tank of the motor was ever emptied. (unless, of course, you were on a really big lake!)

What many fail to note, manufacturers build the transom with a 10 hp max designed in the transom. I would not recommend the 15 for that one reason. Over time the 15 if going at full throttle will damage the transom plus the boat will plow in the water due to too much throttle causing it to slow down. Suggest the Honda 5 plus looking at different prop recommendations.

It would have helped to advise where sailing.

If you look at their web site, high thrust means low pitch, you have to scroll down to the bottom section in original equipment to see it. Unfortuately they both have the same diameter, so you have to determine what the pitch is of your existing prop.

One of the other differences with a high thrust prop is that they use larger surface area blades, "Mickey Mouse" or "Elephant" ear shape, and potentially more blades.

My Nissan/Tohatsu 5 hp has 3 blades, a friend with a Johnson 9.9 hp on his Com-Pac 23 has 4 blades.

Mine also is larger diameter, just barely fits under anti-ventilation plate, maybe 1/4-3/8" clearance. Creates a funky "whumpwhumpwhump" vibration in the boat at low RPM :D

I had a new Honda 5 for 15 years on a Hunter 23. I sailed on the Mississippi River as well as local lakes. One time I had five people aboard motoring into 20 mph wind for ten miles. It never failed to start or do the job. The water pump impeller needed replacing after ten years. Evinrudes are good motors but you don't need 15 HP power for your 22. There is a good market for it on craigslist. Using regular gas (no ethanol mix) without 50:1 mix for a Honda is a plus. The Honda is quieter too. I have an older Honda 10 on a CM 21 but that is only because I got a good deal on it as a used motor. I have been told that if I ever need the carb cleaned, an authorized dealer with ultrasound cleaning equipment should do it because the passages are so much smaller than on a 2 cycle. Good luck!
