Which one 32-34

Which boat? There seem to be so many trade-offs. My slip will hold up to a 34. I mostly sail single-handed generally in light winds. My wife is particularly sensitive to a tender boat. While I would like a new Hunter the budget will only go for a late 1980s model. I have looked at the 32 vision, 33.5 and , with a great stretch a 34. I would appreciate any comments from current owners on the relative strengths of the various boats. OZ in Kingston

New or Used

I was looking at 34's from the early to mid 80's, and ended up with a new 320 last year. The monthly payments were the same, the down payment was half, and we have a new boat. The question comes five years down the road when the used boat would have been paid off and I still have 10 years to go on the new one. The 320 (now 326) has about the same room as the older 34's, so it was a nice decision for me. I know this does't really answer your question, but it might be worth at least a talk with a dealer if budget (IE: monthly payments) will be the deciding factor as it was for me. Steve

Check owner reviews

No need to fill up the slip just because it is there. A smaller boat is easier to sail, set-up, and maneuver, especially single handed. Joanne and I love our 77 h27, and have stayed on her for weeks at a time. Think about 27 to 30 feet. Also, have a look at the Cherubini Hunters from 75 through 84. With heavier keels, and longer overhangs they have a stabler ride than some of the newer models. But almost all of the Hunters do better if sailed "on their feet" - that means with less than 15 degrees of heel. The Admiral is also much more comfortable in that condition. The solution is to reef early. This is good seamanship, faster, and more comfortable as the winds pick up. David Lady Lillie

32 - 34 Choice

Your decision parallels the one that we made two years ago, moving up from an Aloha 27. Our choice was the Vision 32 and it has been totally satisfactory. The boat single hands easily, has great space below and good stable sailing characteristics. I was turned away from the 33.5 by owners comments in this forum. Others will be faster, particularly in light winds, but has turned out to be a great coastal cruiser. Sail both if you can!
