Which Oil Filter

I've set about to change the oil on my newly purchased '79 H33. After completing the arduous task of manually pumping out the old oil (next time I'm spending the extra 20 bucks for the auto pump), I took off the old oil filter. Now, the plate on the engine indicates that it is the original Yanmar 2QM15. I bought a Fram replacement filter #PH5046 as indicated in the Fram book for this particular engine. However, the filter that I removed is a Fram #PH3593. Just to be sure I'm not the one in making the error (not even certain there's a difference between the two) which is the correct filter for my 2QM15??? Many thanks!

Afraid of Fram.

A lot has been written on HOW about filters and staying with Yanmar parts. Not sure I believe it but it is easier to pay the extra bucks than to worry about it. You could ask Ike Torresen, see Related Link.

Marvin: Ed is on point here. There are a lot of horror stories about Fram oil filters. They are actually some of the worst made filters on the market. You only need to change a filter once a year or two, why not get the OEM filter and have a little piece of mind. It will cost you about $2-3 more (you may need to give up a six pack of cheap beer to pay for it).

Fram filter

At one time or another I've used both of the Fram filters you mention. No problems to report.

Use the Yanmar

A filter is a filter is a filter, right? Wrong according to most boaters with Yanmar engines. I guess it has something to do with the pressure the oil is under, but who knows. For the little extra money, I stick with the manufacturers filter. Ken Palmer S/V Liberty 1981 H33

Whoa Nelly.

Give up a six pack? What are you nuts? No you're absolutely right. I've already ordered the Yanmar filter from Torreson. I was just being impatient with buying the Yanmar filter as it was in sight of the check out lane at West Marine. Cheers!
