We are trying to decide on which motor to have installed on our new 26x. Would you go ahead and get the 4 stroke instead of the 2 stroke..? Also, we are trying to decide between the Honda, Yamaha, or Mercury...Any advice would be appreciated.

4 Stroke VS 2 Stroke

Dottie, I went through this very same question when I bought my 26X. After discussion with other boaters, and the dealer, I opted for the 4 stroke Yamaha. Here are the reasons. The 4 stroke, is quieter, and doesn't have the smell we all know from previous years outboards. Maintenance is really not much different from the engine in your automobile. You didn't indicate what horse power you had in mind. I have the 50hp. Powers the boat nicely, and its nice to be able to power back in when the weather kicks up. Another reason I chose the 4 stroke, over the 2, is because of the fuss being kicked up of more pollution by the 2 stroke. Jet Skis are a good example, too. Although I understand that manufacturers are working to develope cleaner burning engines. I'm sure someone out there will know more, and I would welcome enlightenment on that. The only reason I chose the Yamaha, is because I've had them before, and found them quite reliable, and decided I would stick with them. Best of luck in your decision on which engine you choose. Fair winds, and Good sailing!

Dottie, what motor did you buy and from whom

Dottie, I have a Mac 26X on order and it should be delivered within the next two weeks. Like yours, I bought mine without a motor. Which did motor did you buy and from what dealer? Also, did you get a good price? Any information you could provide me would be greatly appreciated. My e-mail address at the Bear's (as in Bryant) University is jomason@cba.ua.edu. Hope to hear from you. John

4 stroke won out!!

John, We ended up getting the Yamaha 4 stroke, 50 HP motor. We got it from a dealer in Harker Heights, Texas. He orginally wanted $6500.00 for it. I found a dealer in Paris, Texas that had several of these in stock and offered to sell them for $5900.00 . So when I told this dealer in Harker Heights this and he beat that dealers price. The Yamaha has a three year warranty , the other motors had 1 year warranties...Everyone I talked to said that the Yamaha was the quietest motor. I hope this answers your questions. Are you going to be taking your 26X to the Gulf or just using it in the area lakes? We live in Texas and have a place in Gulf Shores, Alabama , too. Also, is this your first MacGregor 26X ? It is our first one to own, we have always had power boats, this will be fun..Talk with you later, after you have taken delivery. We are having some extras put on , so we won't take delivery of it till around the 10th of July. Thanks, Dottie

Suzuki 50hp 4stroke

I have the 26X with a Suzuki 50 hp fuel injected 4 stroke. As far as I am concerned, it is by far the best part of the whole boat. Very quiet, especially in the low to mid rpm. Very low fuel consumption. Evinrude (I believe) now also sells the same motor with their own name on it, so parts and servicing should not be a hassle.
