Which Deep cycle battery 6volts or 12volts?

Bought a hunter 27 and I noticed that the previous owner had a 6 volt deep cycle battery and a regular cranking 12 volt. My question is, should I get a 12 volt deep cycle or stick with the 6 volt???? Forgive my ignorance:redface:

Can we assume that you have 2 of the 6vdc batteries along with the cranking 12vdc?

Curious as to why they had a single 6v in there to start with. 2 of them I can see (lots of people use the Golf Cart batteries like that, a pair (or two) 6v batteries wired together). Pretty much anything in your boat, or designed for it, is going to be looking for a 12v supply, so you should definitely plan on that. Either replace that 6v with a 12, or replace it with a pair of 6vs together and wire them in series to get your 12v back. A lot of it will also depend on space available to do so.

Thank you CharlzO for your feedback! Will replace that 6 with a 12v!

The h27s were wired for 12V. You could either use one 12V battery or two 6V batteries connected in series. I would suggest you pick up two 12V group 27 wet cell, deep cycle batteries and connect them to a 1,2,All, OFF battery switch. Each individual battery is very capable of starting the small auxiliary diesel so they can act both as a house battery and a starting battery. Two batteries will provide backup and an extra surge of power when needed. The switch will be used to determine which battery will be in use #1 or #2 or ALL if they are going to be combined. The selected batteries will handle the loads and will receive the charge from the alternator if so wired for.

For house batteries, about a year ago we picked up two 115Ahr 12v deep cycle wet cell batteries at Walmart and have them in parallel They were about $100 each. Worked fine for far. The start battery is a much more expensive Interstate battery, however, the house batteries would turn over the engine no problem if need be.

If you have two 6V deep cycle batteries, as a house bank, wired in series for 12V, DEFINITELY stick with them. They are far superior to imposter "deep cycle" 12V batteries.....

12V flooded batteries, and the term deep cycle, do not really apply other than for marketing purposes... 6v batteries on the other hand are a true deep cycle battery.

Ingearnous: You are wasting your money having a seperate starter battery as your house bank will suffice for all DC requirements plus it will charge the bank while running.
I can't even imagine a 6 volt in parallel or in series on a boat! You are lucky the battery did not explode and cause serious damage! I just can't imagine anyone that dumb! Chief

Chief? What? I have house batteries in parallel. 6 volt would always be x2 in series, although you could have two groups and run them in parallel. Starting battery should alway be separate incase the house batteries run down and you need to start to get out of Dodge. What u say?

Please tell me you are kidding....?

ingeanous: You were not clear about how your batteries were wired up. Thats the reason for my concern. Separate starter battery use is really a waste of money, space and application. If you are worried about having enough charge from your house bank to start your motor put your starter battery in parallel with your house bank. A voltage meter monitor is also wise. Chief

Sorry if I alarmed anyone but this whole post is a bit confusing. My immediate concern was wiring up different voltage batteries together and in the wrong configuration. (Check the first post) Just did not want to see that happen! Chief
