I have to re-bed the chainplates and the surveyor recommended 3M 4200. It only comes in black or white and my deck is grey. The previous owner used a clear caulk which looks better. Any recommendations on who makes a clear caulk? Thanks.

4200

I would stick with the 4200. It works very well. If you go with a clear silicon, you won't get near as much success (adhesion isn't very good with silicon). Get the white 4200 and you'll find that it will look good and last a long time. If you do want to go with clear, look into Boat-life or Boat-Caulk (I can't remember which one is the one you need). Hopefully you will get someone replying that is familiar with either of these. Just my opinion. -Rob

I use either Sikaflex 291 or 3M 101

Chain plates need to be rebedded often and 4200 is very tenacious. It's not as bad as 5200 but it can still rip up gel coat! Sikaflex has better elasticity, great adhesion and it comes apart better than 4200 or UV4000....

It's all in how you do the installation

Dis-assemble the chainplated and clean bot the deck and the chainplate to remove all of the old bedding compound. Wipe the deck area with acetone and allow it to dry. Use some of that masking tape designed for triming paint, it's blue in color. Cover the area around the chainplate by at least an inch. Put the chainplate in place dry, and trim around it with a razor knife. lift up the chainplate and remove the tape to expose the deck where the contact is to be made. Generously apply the bedding compound. Install the chain plate, using a little bit of the compound under the heads of the bolts. Do not turn the bolts, but instead tighten the nuts from the inside, just enough to gently squeeze out some of the compound onto the tape. Allow the compound to harden, the fully tighten the nuts, being absolutely careful not to turn the bolt heads. Take your razor knife, and trim around the chainplates, then remove the tape. You should have a professional looking finish.
