I have two sets of battens. One set appears to be made of PVC or some sort of plastic. They are quite flexible. The other set is mad of pultruded fiberglass and are much stiffer. Which would be the most effective for a newbie?

The general rule of thumb is to use the more flexible battens in light wind and the stiffer battens in heavy winds. The ultimate determination will be sail shape. You want a smooth transition from the forward end (the flexible end) of the batten and the sail. If there is a kink at that point, the batten is too stiff for the given wind conditions. The leech should have a straight exit.

Thanks!

Wind today is 7-15 MPH. I'm thinking the more flexible.

Correct selection. So, how did the sail shape look in those conditions?
