Hi everyone. I have recently purchased a C30 tall rig 1987 and would like to know more about auto pilots for my boat. I am considering buying a Simrad WP30 auto pilot, they seem to be a stronger unit with faster speed and better control downwind. I know many sailors that have had problems with the Rayathon autohelm st4000 plus, so I am a little concerned about purchasing this product.

Hi Dan: I installed a AH4000+ on my 1996 C30 last summer. Installation was simple and so far, no problems. I only have about 25 hours of operation so far, but usually electronics go bad right away. I ended up installing the flux gate compass on the bulkhead over the rear berth just forward of the opening port in to the cockpit. Only had a 6 degree error there, max allowable is 15 deg. Easy to wire as the pedistal base is only a foot away. Good luck. Dave

Dan, I also installed the 4000+ about five years ago. Installation was simple and I have had zero problems. I have it interfaced with a Magellan gps and life is sweet. I highly reccommend the unit. Hope this helps. Sean S/V Carnaby Street

Dan, My Autohelm 3000 has worked for many years flawlessly, has hundreds of hours on it. It is plenty strong for the Catalina 30, but don't count on any autopilot working well downwind in a blow unless you drop the main and go on the headsail only. I crossed Block Island Sound, alone, downwind in 30 knots+ and heavy seas using only an 85% jib. Tracking was arrow straight even surfing at 8-9 knots. I wonder if the extra cost of the 4000 is worth it when the 3000 will do the job.
