Where's the water from?

Stepping down below my Hunter31 1986 there is wooden slats(just in front of the engine). Lifting this reveals 2 keel bolts and just aft is a drainage hole approx. 1/2" in diameter that is constantly draining water no matter how much I soak up. Note: it never rises more than an inch. Where is this water coming from? I asked Hunter Marine Techs to no avail.

Maybe from the engine bilge?

Alan: On our 1985 H'31 we have a drain hole from the engine compartment to the area under the steps. If the packing on the shaft is leaking it accumulates under the engine and then drains into this area. If you do have a hole to drain the engine compartment, maybe it is overflow and draining in there. We also get rain water that accumulates there. It drains off the companionway hatch.

Alan; I was having a similar problem and after checking every through hull I discovered, after climbing past the fuel tank in the strbdr lazarette, that the strbdr scupper hose had a slight leak. This leak was more prevalent in a following sea with the water pressure being forced into the scuper drain through hull. The extra pressure produced caused more water to leak out of the hose connection. Just replace the hose if indead, this is the source of your water under the grate. regards, Mac Lindsay 1984 H31 Kitkatla

Your not alone

I have a similar problem. I have it pin-pointed to dripping water from the rear port underside of the aft cabin floor! I have an 84 H 31. I have an inspection hatch just aboce the shaft strut in which I can get a peak of the water dripping. It only drips while underway, which would suggest the scubber leak as another fellow noticed, however, the scubber hose and fitting is dry so I am still working on it. Stick your head down there with a flashlight while moving and check it out.

Ditto

I have the same exact leak! I have checked the scubber on the port side, and it is ok. I plan on checking the scubber on the starboard side (behind the fuel tank) this weekend. Someone else said the source of their leak was the muffler (under the fuel tank). I'll let you know what I find. This seems to be a common leak on 84-85 H31. Bob S/V Lady Di II

Muffler Leak?

Bob, I would expect a muffler leak to produce some blackish water. Also my leak shows up while under sail, although I did have a muffler leak where the inlet was glassed to the muffler, which I patched with some fiberglass. Let me know what you find. JIM

Still Looking

I checked the starboard scubber and the exit for the exhaust. Both are dry. The leak seems to be between the hull and the hull liner. Next I'm going to check the muffler if I can find out how to get to it. Looks like it's time to place another question on the "HOW" page. Bob
