I'm looking for two group 4Ds or three group 31s, gel cells. I've looked in some of the catalogs (WM, Defender, BoatUS) and was wondering if I can get a better deal someplace else, maybe a web site. TIA, Joe Mullee

try this

Here is a good source for AGM batteries. I install and service off grid solar systems and I feel the Concorde AGM is the best battery for boats and small solar systems hands down. It costs a little more than other batteries, but will last quite a bit longer and they are bomb proof. A gel cell is prone to failure if overcharged, and they need their own charge setting. An AGM battery will tolerate a much higher charge rate, and has all the other advantages of a gel cell. The Concorde battery is used in military and commercial avaition, do a google for aircraft batteries and 95% of the hits will be concorde batteries. I have one system in a backcountry cabin that is using a pair of 8D Concorde AGMs that is 12 years old and the batteries still have better than 90% their original capacity. I got my battery

from a friend of mine who is a mechanic. I got an Interstate model SRM27B gp 27 battery (Practical Sailor rated it a best buy). Got a decent deal. I'm satisfied with its performance. Interstate also has a 4D deep discharge battery that might be worth looking into.

Price local.....2 places in Annapolis

They are named similarly, but different companies- something like Battery Warehouse. IMHO, the one in Edgewater is best, it's at the fork near the rib joint. (Sorry, all names are escaping me tonight.) The guys there are really helpful and generally have or can get what u need. And, their prices have been best in my past searches. The other is off Aris T Allen, I foget the name of that road but it's the first left off ATA, after you go down from Rt 2. Not as helpful, but worth pricing. Email me if you want more, dcdon@hotmail.com

Go to SAMS CLUB

They have the best bang for the buck on batteries. They have the 4D's and 31's but I don't thenk they are gels. Personally I wouldn't go with gels but I'm on a Hunter budget and those $50 golf cart batteries can't be beat

Battery Wholesaler in your area

Look around. They may not advertise or may only advertise in the business-to-business yellow pages, but there is usually a wholesaler that will also sell to the public. I got my Trojan T-105's (golf car batteries) for about 5 dollars more each than I could get them at Sam's Club, but I like like the Trojans better than the Sam's Club batteries. (220 amp hours vs. 210, but I really like that fact that Trojans have a removable handle that I can use to move the batteries.) I bought from the local distributor - handles only Trojans. There is also an outfit that sells 8Ds, etc. and will deliver to the marina (or at least to the one closest to them) either free or for a nominal charge, and carry away the old batteries. Also mostly wholsale.

Just how far?

Joe, Depending on how far you are willing to drive. The DEKA plant is in Topton, PA. If you look at a map, it is just below Kutztown, which is directly west of Allentown. It is about an hour drive for us and we are 1¼ hours from Chestertown. You need to call first to make sure they have them in stock. They sell blems and are perfect batteries otherwise. They will give you the price over the phone and I think you can figure about a 40% discount. If it is worth a day's travel. I do not think they are open on the weekend. You can email me if you need any more info. I am in the directory. Mike DiMario s/v Serenity H376
