Where's My "Hailing Port"

I am about to change the hailing port on my recently purchased vessel. So, what do I put down as the location? I could technically put my home town since it is located on a river accessible by the vessel. Or, I could put the town where the boat is moored? It appears that most folks put there home towns on their boats which seems silly, when most are not located near water.

I think you can use your home or where the

boat is kept. I think you can use a landlocked city if you want, in my case I use the boat's home port but I've seen places like Phoenix, AZ used. The only river there is the Salt I think and I don't believe it's navigable in that area.

Any thing you like

Even for documented recreational boats any homeport you like is OK. It is used as an identifier only, in addition to the boat name. I've even seen fictional names like "Emerald City" for a boat Named "OZ". But if you change the homeport of a documented boat, you must file paperwork and pay a fee. I think its about $200. I just looked into this a while back. If the boat is not documented, then who cares but you.

That brings up documentation question

My boat was documented when I bought it. The surveyor told me that if I didn't want to file new paperwork, and pay fees, then there is no need to do anything. Just register with the state, which is what I did. Is that true??

Current Documentation

I do not know if there are any repercussions from letting the documentation lapse. The listed owner receives a form every year to renew the documentation at no charge. So the registered owner would be incorrect. I think they just put the documentation into inactive status if it's not renewed. Check the USCoastguard website under services/documentation

Change of home port??

Jon, I recently moved and will be sailing my boat from NY to NC in the spring. Are you sure that if I change my home port on both the paper work and on the boat it will cost me $200?? If that is true, I will keep the Yorktown, NY hailing port while sailing in the waters of New Bern, NC ..... Wonder if I do that if I am breaking another law?? John s/v Lady K

$200 seems high?

I think that the $200 guess-timate is pretty high. Initial vessel documentation, assuming you do this easy task yourself, runs $133, per this site: http://www.uscg.mil/hq/g-m/vdoc/fees2.htm This site: http://www.uscg.mil/hq/g-m/vdoc/faq.htm explains that changing the hailing port is easy: HOW DO I CHANGE THE NAME OR HAILING PORT OF MY VESSEL? "The name and/or hailing port may be changed by filing an application for change on form CG-1258 with the appropriate fees. If your vessel is subject to a mortgage of record, you must obtain permission from the mortgagee on form CG-4593." That being said, I couldn't exactly find the fee for name change listed on the list of fees. Good Luck anyway! Tim Brogan April IV C350 #68 Seattle

I think it's the same as an "exchange" or

transfer and uses same form, CG 1258, so is $84. But you can always call them, they always get back to you pretty quick with an answer.

about $80 bucks is correct

we changed ours from St Petersburg to Navarre Beach when we bought our boat. and to answer the other question, the hailing port only adds to the name for identification. as stated before, it does even have to be a "real" place.

Clarification

OK, The $200 dollar figure is wrong. Hey, I did say "about":). But it looks like it could run from $84 to $120 if a mortgage is involved. I check up on it on the Coastguard site, and the best explanation in one location was http://www.uscg.mil/hq/g-m/vdoc/instr/instrex.doc Also the instructions for form CG-1258 says that the hailing port "must be a place in the United States". Interpret that, as you will. And you can pick any place you like. It doesn't have to relate to you at all. I've seen cities, communities, lakes, and bays all used. Now I'm going to take a nap. I have a headache from trying to navigate the Coastguard website.

Keep my current hailing port

Thanks for information .......... If the hailing port can be any place one selects ... I might as well keep the NY port rather than change to the a NC one and save myself the money. Thanks for the clarification John s.v Lady K
