There must be someone out there that has hooked up an auto pilot to a GPS. Second try; I just hooked up a Simrad WP30 auto pilot. It says its compatible with all Garmin GPS’s. I have a 182c GPS. I have both working independently. I notice that they have several wires of the same color on each unit. I would "assume" that these wires should be joined. But before I do this I thought I’d ask someone that has already done it. Thanks for the help.

Back to the books

The book for the autopilot should identify pin numbers or wire numbers for NMEA data in and also address what version of NMEA data it is compatible with. The Garmin book will identify pins that have NMEA data and methods of changing formats. Hook NMEA highs and lows together select the proper format and then follow your autopilot instructions to track a GPS course. You will have to select a GO TO waypoint on your GPS for the autopilot to use the cross track error to follow the course line. Hope this helps. Jack

Not So Fast

Richard, you need to identify the NMEA 0183 output wires from the Garmin Cable. These wires then are connected to the NMEA input terminals of the autopilot. I am not familiar with Simrad AP arrangement so you will have to get the book out.

Careful...

Same color wires is fine (probably) for supply voltage, but on communication lines you probably would end up connecting an output to an output and an input to an input, opposite from what you need to make it work. The manual or tech support are where you need to start. RTFM Read The (ehem)Fine Manual

Colors change again with remote

If you use the remote with your WP30 the "data in" lines change to yet a different colored pair. The guys are right check the data and if you don't have it all check out the web sites for each mfr. I have a WP30 and remote working just fine with a Lowrance GlobalMap 100 but I can assure you that each mfr used different color codes and some use a seperate signal return others just rely on the ground. Brian.
