I'm considering a trip to Newport next week on my H-290. Can anyone suggest a marina to stay at?

Marinas or Mooring?

There are many marinas in Newport, but it will be pricey. I like The Newport Marina, but there are others: Newport Shipyard Casey's West Winds Banister's Wharf Do a Yellow Pages look-up. There are quite a few. If you arrive early call Old Port on CH68 for a mooring. They won't take reservations. There's launch Service all over the harbor (for a fee). Call them on 68, also. These are only a few. There are plenty more.

West Winds...

We've stayed at West Winds a couple of times. If you're a sub mega-yacht, they'll put you inside of a small dock-enclosed area (I think they call it "the basin") that is almost impossible to maneuver in. Don't try to leave without their help! They're always ready to warp you out, just get your lines ready and call 'em up. It's inconvenient if you want to leave before the staff comes in. It's a little off the beaten path (at Waite's Wharf) which can be a good thing. Still an easy walk to nearly everywhere. One time we were hours late getting in. The guys stayed at the marina for two extra hours to make sure we were in safely. There used to be this half-sunk, rusting ferry right next door that had been turned into a drink-till-you-puke 20-something bar. Lotsa late-night noise, so ask if it's gone before you book. It's the same at Christy's, however. As the tee-shirt says, Newport is "a drinking town with a yachting problem." I LOVE Newport. Every time we go there we play tennis on the grass courts. If i had a choice i would do ...

newport yacht club 401 846 9410 ... at least you are not stuck with a bunch of weekend, live aboard, put puts from out of town. And the location is pretty quiet right in front of the Marriott hotel. The Club also used to rent member's moorings but the city council nixed that so they don't do moorings now. Weekends now through the boat show are going to be tight ... last couple of weekends saw no free moorings on Saturday ... but then we had the festivals running. Probably the best weekend will be the one before Labor Day ... seems to be an "off" time one week before a three day weekend. After Labor Day the boats for the boat show start arriving and that does cause a lot of space problems. Oldport launch is $2 per person per trip. Vic "Seven"
