I am planning to put a Webesto Thermal 90 in a Hunter 38. Could anyone recommend the best placement for the unit?

Unless you have some sort of active venting to the rest of the boat the normal placement is on the forward salon bulkhead in the main cabin. This allows the radiant heat to warm the biggest part of the boat and puts the exhaust vent away from the cabin and keeps it out from under foot on the deck. Be sure to accont for needing to go forward to reef or do other sail adjustment in the exhaust placement.

Doo, I would assume here you are talking about a Diesel Cabin Heater. If I am wrong then stop reading right here.... anyway we had one on our last boat and it was placed in the Lazerette but on the 38 I think you can get it in the aft storage area. Placement there makes it easy to run the fuel line from the tank and then run the exhaust and intake out the aft. I was seriously looking at one for this boat but (other than the cost) running the ductwork was the biggest concern. We absolutely loved our diesel heater in the last boat and the Admiral would love to have another in this one too...

I had a Hunter 380 but have been aboard the 38 (looking for the differences) and I've also had four other Webasto diesel furnaces in my three previous boats and now have the fourth in my present H27. They are good heating devices. We also had one water unit plus the three hot air.

Hoping my memory is correct, my Webasto in my Hunter 380 was in the stern port locker, but underneath the decking. You could still use the locker for storage however, the furnace unit was underneath it. You could service it by removing a panel in the aft cabin bulkhead.

The run for the hot air ducting went down the port side under cabinetry shelves in the aft main cabin, through a hanging locker, behind the head and through the storage locker in the head and then into the main cabin where it came out in between the two lockers under the settee. One advantage to the long run was that all those lockers stayed warm when the furnace was in use. The boat would warm up in about twenty minutes when the furnace was turned on on cold days (40 degrees).

Although I've never used your unit, I would recommend a small fuel filter and a muffler on the exit tube. Webasto furnaces have gotten much quieter in the last few years but I still think making them absolutely quiet when at dock is essential to good neighbor relationships.

Hope this helps.

Webasto heater

Using a Webasto Thermo90ST (hydronic) in a 2005 Hunter 38. It is mounted in the starboard aft compartment (there's an access off the swimstep) with an access cut into the aft cabin wall. Easy access to diesel tank and exhaust to stern. Toasty inside in no time. Downside is noise in the aft cabin, but we never run it while sleeping, and running it while awake in salon has the sound 'far' away. Our installer cleverly has it also looped through the water heater, so we can have hot water without running the engine or shore power...and a vent that blows on the head bowl.

I've always thought suffering was overrated.

As close to the transom as possible, usually in one of the aft lockers. The exhaust will have some length restrictions and the temps of the exhaust run quite hot so you want to keep it as short as possible. The guys at Sure Marine out your way can help if needed as they are a Webasto dealer.. The hydronic runs can go anywhere but the flue really dictates the placement
