Where to Mount a Radar Display on Hunter 33.5?

Hi fellow Hunter owners, I'd like to ask for opinions on whether the cockpit buldhead would be a good place for a radar display on a Hunter 33.5. See attached mockup in photo. My thought is that here the radar could be adjusted by a navigator who could help with reading it and interpreting it. If alone in the cockpit, the helmsperson could see the display rather decently from the helm and, while on autopilot, move to the display to make any adjustment. When in fog, when radar seems most needed, the boat is likely under engine power. Another advantage is that in a non-fog use of radar to help "see" distant traffic, perhaps when doing an extended cruise and on autopilot (by sail or motor) the radar might be most comfortably monitored from the comfort of the cockpit port bench in the protection of the dodger. My concern with placing it at the helm is that I haven't figured out how to do it without it being in the way there, i.e., blocking normal view forward when seated etc. If anyone has mounted a radar at their helm on a 33.5 or similar model, please advise. A photo would be great. Any ideas on this will be very much appreciated. Thanks, Joe

Radar Mount for a 335

Hi Joe, I installed a JRC 1500 Radar Unit on my 1992 Hunter 335 this spring. I used a Garhauer Mast on the port side for the transmitter and flush mounted the display on the port side bulkhead next to my tri-data display. It has worked very well for me. In most conditions I can read the radar screen from the helm without a problem. Sometimes you have to fiddle with the contrast and backlighting, but usually its ok. Worst case I just move around to the port side of the helm to have a closer look. The space behind the bulkhead is pretty tight.I actually moved the tridata display outboard of its original location to make room for the radar display. I also couldn't figure out a good way to mount the radar on the binnacle that wasn't either going to get in the way or expose the radar display to abuse. But I'm happy with the way I did it. Please let me know if you have any other questions about this. Gary Wyngarden S/V Shibumi H335

More on Radar Displays on H33.5

Hi Gary and Hunter owners, It helps to know, Gary, that your installation of a radar display at the bulkhead works ok. I hope very much to hear from others on this, both those who chose the bulkhead and those who mounted at the helm. Another question is whether Radar displays can be put at the helm and removed when not in use? That has been suggested as a solution but I wonder about how well that solution works in practice... including dealing with detached cables and having the unit exposed to weather (not in a pod?) when mounted for use. Do any of you have views or experience with this? Thanks, Joe

A SAILOR FRIEND OF MINE MOUNTED...

his in the companionway so that he could view it from the helm as well as from below. His was on a swivel arm so that it would lay againts the companionway bulkhead to avoid interfering with companionway ladder traffic as well as weather protection. Of course he did not have a 33.5; a Freedom 32. Terry

Mount arm, put on when necessary

I had a 1985 H34 and put the Furuno radar on one of those white arms from Edson that mounts on the ped guard. Used a piece of oak to mount the radar display bracket on and a carriage bolt to attach to the Edson arm. Use a wing nut and it is easy on and easy off, will not be stolen, and easy to see when at the wheel. I only put the display on when I needed it and kept it stored below other times. Three reasons: 1 - I wanted the unit close enough so I could concentrate on the screen at the helm when necessary 2 - I ran the GPS, autopilot and other instruments through the NMEA so they displayed on the radar screen so there was less to distract me when in fog 3 - You are paying a lot of money for these instruments and having it on a bulkhead is in harms way of an elbow that could crack the glass on the LCD And doesn't it seem that someone is always sitting in front of the bulkhead mounted depth instrument when you want to see it? I moved the other instruments from the bulkhead to the pedestal mount for the same reason as above. We just moved up to a 380 this season and have the RL-70 Raytheon plotter/radar and it is right in front of my field of vision on the ped guard as I sit at the helm. Perfect.

Radar Display Mount on H-33.5

We have the Furuno Radar Display mounted to the port side of the sliding companionway hatch cover. That puts it under the dodger, in sight of the helmsman, in sight of another person sitting on the portside seat, and above elbows of persons sitting on the portside seat. The mounting bracket sits there and lets us mount or remove the display unit. We always remove it and store it below when leaving the boat. That works fine for us. Dick Carey S/V Puffin 1990 H-33.5
