I'm installing a Racor filter for the Yanmar 3GMF on my H34. According to a web site I found (www.yanmarhelp.com) it indictes that the filter should be installed at the same level or below the fuel pump. "DO NOT... Fit the primary fuel filter above the tank / fuel level, it is very difficult to get rid of the air trapped inside. Where possible mount it at or below the level of the fuel lift pump". I'm looking for opinions on this advice. As far as I can tell the web site mentioned is not sanctioned by Yanmar. All the installations I've seen appear to have the filter mounted slightly higher than the fuel pump. Thanks in advance, Joe Mullee

Joe, I recommend you get Fred Ficarra's opinion on this. Look his email up here. He is an expert on the 34. Although I havent seen him post recently he is always around.. probably sailing. Mine a dual system which I can close one off if it clogs, are slightly below the fuel tank level in the alley running to the engine. They are mounted on the bulkhead there. They are definately below the secondary filter (on the engine). However, I have a 336. Different animal. You wont be sorry you took the time to put them in the line. Cheers Rick

My Racor is mounted in the aft bunk on a stringer that is accessible by removing the cusion in the bunk and then the panel. It sits below the level of the fuel pump on my 3GM30 and is in the area of the stuffing box and about 2 feet from the back of the transmission.It is very accessible and easy to work on.

On my 34 The Racor
My Racor is mounted next to the stuffing box on the starboard side under the aft berth. There was a plywood panel mounted there with a Fram filter when I purchased the boat. I removed the Fram and installed the Racor. This puts the Racor below the fuel pump but I would not say that is "easily" accessible...but it works. Tom

movie???? I had to install Apples' latest Quicktime player to get it to run.;{ I do have my old 1999 Sony digital that takes movies. But they are small. They also are limited to a floppy. The advantage is they are easily viewable in Windows. Hmmmm, more rubber gone soon, maybe. Oh, Rick. My baby has pretty much always been a monster. I bought the engine for it back in 1968 because I wanted BIG power. My buddies said that I won't install it. The 375 horse 396 I ordered would have plenty of power.(really 425+HP) They were right. Not until a seat fell out of one of the aluminum heads and wrecked the engine did I update the L88 to the latest and greatest open chamber stuff. That was in 74. It's much better now. Where's that camera? And it's never been restored. Unlike Epitome'.

But I learned alot about car engines I've already mounted it just forward of the battery selector switch just under the engine box hatch. I got the idea from a picture that Dan Johnson posted here but had also posted in the past. I kept the photo and used it as a guide. After reading what JKKSAIL and John Meyer wrote I'll stay with that and see what happens. Moving it in the furue should not present any problems if nesseccary. Thanks to everyone, even the car guys. Joe glad ya got it figured out while Fred and I shot the sh*t. Fred, I checked out the videos. Very very kewl and it does seem you have no real axle hop. My bud had a 67 in high school. He had a tricked out 327 three speed. We staggered the shocks but he finally had to put a stabilizer bar on it. Think I see one hiding there in your mock up pic. Cheers Rick

it doesn't hurt to be a car guy when working on boat filters. Rick, that rear bar is a replacement Addco for the Addco I installed 37 years ago. It's detailed on my web site. Also the wheel hop these cars have is under control with Lift Bars. I just installed new ones to replace my old Lakewood's. Also on my site. Cheers back to you.

as a car guy having started out as a drag racer and switched to running sports cars in SCCA Nationals, I had to take my keyboard apart and dry it out after drooling all over it looking at Fred's toy pics and video! Let us know how the filter placement works out as I am still considering the same placement as a part of a fuel system rework once I get the boat in the water in a couple of weeks.
