I'm starting to install all of my electronics on Blue Max and am purchasing a Speed/Depth/Temp NMEA2000 thru-hull. I'm trying to figure out where is the best place to mount it. Because of the depth sensor I want it as vertical as possible. That probably means just forward of the keel. Does anyone have a similar type thru-hull? If so, where did you mount it and how well does it work?Thanks,Rics/v Blue Max#2692www.ric-maxfield.net

Hi Rick,I installed a depth transducer in the Ballad just aft of the keel and off to the port side. The instructions allowed up to a 15° slope so I was OK. I was concerned about drilling a hole on the centerline (ahead of the keel) as the glass is pretty thick there and a flat area would have to be created on the outside of the hull to seat the transducer properly. How high is the NMEA 2000 transducer? I\'m thinking of going that route but have limited clearance, as my batteries are above. Could you measure the height of yours for me?Thanks!Peter.

Installed my at port side approximately 10" from centerline 12" before keel. Working excellent. Installed Simrad speed and depth transducer.

Hi Ric,

You can see the factory installed transducer on the hull, it is the lower one out of the three hull threw. I think I am going to stay with the location and go with it.LarrySent from Windows MailFrom: n4lbl alan.schulman@... [AlbinVega]

Peter,Since I retired last year I've been working for West Marine (boat parts and supplies) part time, mostly for the employee discount. I'm going with Navico for all my electronics and purchased the B&G Zues2 chart plotter and the Simrad RS35 VHF/AIS radio and HS35 remote handset. I haven't purchased the transducer yet and don't have the exact dimensions, but it is the DST800 thru-hull triducer that has speed, depth and temp. I tried to find the size info on Navico's websites, but didn't locate anything. From the pictures it appears to be about 5" tall. I probably won't be ordering it for a few more weeks. If you're not in any hurry, I can send you the measurements once I receive it.Thanks for the idea of the aft quadrant. That would help keep the cable runs short. and easy to get to from a cockpit locker, as long as I don't pile a bunch of stuff all around it.Rics/v Blue Max#2692www.ric-maxfield.net

Larry,I'm not sure what you are referring to. My boat had an in-hull depth transducer just forward of the keel and a mechanical speed log on the starboard side of the keel about even with the combi. I've already glassed over the hole for the speed log. Because I'm using a NMEA 2000 backbone, it will probably be a shorter cable run if I locate the transducer in the stern rather than up front. My tiller pilot will be tied in also, so having two T-Connectors inside the cockpit locker will make things easier, plus that's pretty close to the VHF/AIS and chart plotter. I want to keep things as simple as possible.Rics/v Blue Max#2692www.ric-maxfield.net

Thanks Rick ... no rush as there are two other projects to do first (anchor windlass and heater). I have about 4 1/4" clearance between the floor of my battery box and the hull ... may be a squeeze, but I have AGM batteries and can always turn them on their side for an extra bit of room.Cheers,Peter.

Hi Ric,The location right now is under the head? Are you saying it should go somewhere else?LarrySent from Windows MailFrom: n4lbl alan.schulman@... [AlbinVega]Sent: ?Monday?, ?March? ?2?, ?2015 ?3?:?16? ?AMTo: n4lbl alan.schulman@... [AlbinVega]

As per Transducer's manual it has be installed at the bow part of boat instead of stern

Tym,Attachments don't come through with the post. You would have to save it to the files section. I don't doubt that the suggested location is forward, but they will work pretty much anywhere there isn't a lot of turbulence from passing around the keel. Of course having the depth finder up front when you're in really skinny water is a benefit. Once I take delivery of the transducer I'm buying, I'll definitely review their suggestions.Thanks,Rics/v Blue Max#2692www.ric-maxfield.net

Larry,I sent this once, but it doesn't look like it went through. The thru-hull under the head should be for your waste discharge. The one forward of it is the water intake for the head. You wouldn't want your transducer close to the head. It probably wouldn't be any fun cleaning it out when it gets mucked up.Rics/v Blue Max#2692www.ric-maxfield.net

Larry,The thru-hull under the head should be for emptying the head, and the one in front of that should be water intake for the head. You don't want the transducer close to the head. You might be surprised why the speed wheel isn't turning.Rics/v Blue Max#2692www.ric-maxfield,net

Attached is manual. On page #2 the best location for different type of boat. Our option full keel.

Tym,Thanks for posting the installation instructions. I see where it says for best location on a full keel boat. That is their suggestion for best performance. As I mentioned in a previous post, any location where there isn't turbulent water flow across the wheel will work. It just won't be the ideal location. I'll have to look at how my NMEA 2000 backbone lays out and see if I can put it forward without too much rework. How long is the cable on the unit? I didn't se it listed in the file. Also, if you know how high up the unit measures from the inside surface, that would answer Peter's question.Thanks,Rics/v Blue Max#2692www.ric-maxfield.net

My wheel is located just forward of the sink, near the keel on the starboard side.Compared to gps readings, the speed reading is off a bit (less than a knot) from port and starboard tack readings.Forward of the keel, as suggested would probably be a better location. Tim

I have a units at home, they provide a plug, and you can remove unit for maintenances, or prevent damage during boat removal. All together with throu-hull not more than 3" from inside. Cable 5'-6'. I'll take a picture and measurement when I get home. You can buy extension cable if required.
