Neil Pryde

Yup, lotta questions. Neil Pryde was the original sail supplier for many O'Days. I have replaced all the sails on my O'Day 37 with Neil Pryde sails over the pastthree years -- 130% genoa, working jib, main and cruising spinnaker. I am very happy with the quality of the workmanship, the sails, the fit and not least the price. Check them out on the web and talk to Bob Pattison, Chief Designer. They are in Milford, Connecticut, at least the east coast office is. The sails are made in China. As for results -- Ha! New boat altogether. I never would have believed that hanging different rags on the spars would make such a difference. As for price, you can get an online quote. We have big sails and they each ran well over $1,000 but less than $2,000. Our old sails, by the way, now reside at Bacons in Annapolis. One was judged good, one (the main) fair and one (the genny) worthless. That one is back in the closet here where wife intends to make all sorts of goodies out of it.

New Sails

Bobby, I just had a new 135% genoa for my OD 26 made by Doyle Sails who have a shop adjacent to my marina. The 135% with an upgraded material ran $1300. I ordered it and it was ready in two weeks which was great. I've had in on for about a week and can attest to the difference it has made in the boat's performance over the original - 15 year old - jib. I like the idea that the shop is nearby so that when/if repairs need to made I can just bring it in as opposed to mail order. I dont know how the price stacks up against the mail order shops though. Good Sailing Greg Jones

That big a difference?

Do the new sails make that big a difference? My main is origional (1972 hull) and I have been on the fence as to repair/replace. I have a new roller furler/genny that is 2 years old, and I use that most of the time. So does a new main make the performance that much better, and how so?

new sails

I read an article in soundings a while back about this guy who was very famous. He was completely broke, didn't work and lived on a small boat like your 23 and cruised up and down the coast between key west and new england. The sails he used on his boat were made from plastic tarps which he likely salvaged from a dumpster at a marina. they pushed his boat just fine, but he never won any races. I was canoeing on the connecticut river many years ago and we lashed two canoes together, tied some nylon jackets to two canoe paddles and sailed downwind down the river holding the paddles. So you can go from this extreme to carbon fiber re-inforced mylar/kevlar racing sails. I have made all my sails in recent years using kits from sailrite. saves about 75% on the cost. All of them came out very good. The sail on my dinghy (little jan) works great, the others I have made include a cruising spinaker, storm jib, and storm trysail. Give them a try. dave

Just ordered new sails...

from Cruising Direct in Portsmouth, RI. This was after an outrageous quote from Quantum and an equally outrageous quote from Neil Pryde. Same material, same sail specs, less than half the price. I checked these guys out through a couple of other folks that purchased from them and all are very happy with their sails. The three week delivery time is reasonable. A new 130 and a new main made to original specs...less than $1,300 delivered. By the way, Cruising Direct is the small boat (under 40 feet) division of North Sails. This filled the bill for my 272LE very nicely. Cheers, Bob Lazybones II Warwick, RI

Believe it or not...

I have a '79 O'Day 23, and I have the original sails. The sails and bags are labeled as "Neil Pryde". I would think they still have the original specs available. However, all boats are slightly different, and you will have to measure yours for exact replacements; since you have to do this anyway and since the art of sailmaking has advanced significantly since O'Day went out of business, you probably can go just about anywhere for new sails.

Suggest you pick-up a copy of SOUNDINGS. Many competative sailmakers are listed in the classified section...phone, fax or E-Mail them.

another vote for cruising direct

Bob once you get your CD sails ... and I get my CD sails let's do a little racing on Narragansett Bay ... Their sales man must of had a lot of time on his hands as he came down and helped me measure for my sails ... sold me a gennacker which I like a lot because it is great for going up the east passage. My main and jib are being built at Toronto north. Vic Seven Newport

Hey, Vic...

I saw "Seven" in the mooring field when I was staying at Ida Lewis YC a couple of weeks ago. You're right, Chuck is a terrific guy to deal with, very helpful indeed. He picked up my old sails and repaired them so I wouldn't be stranded while the new ones were being built. Hope to see you around Newport. Cheers, Bob
