Unless you've been living under a rock or you're from the west coast, you have to know that the Chesapeake Bay was hit by a massive tidal surge last Friday morning devistating many bay side towns like Annapolis, Rock Hall and Havre de Grace (where our baot is located) to name a few along with their marinas. The clean up / fix up will take a long time I'm sure. However, I made some calls around the top part of the bay looking for a marina that would expect to have pump out services soon and could find not a one that has it now or expects to have it soon. Our marina, Tidewater, told me that they would not have pump outs available for the rest of the year although they did say that their shop can so it but I think only after a boat is hauled out. Does anyone know where a pump out might be had in the near future. I'm sure that this is of some interest to the DNR since there are a lot of boats out there with something in their waste tanks. There still is are a lot of sailing days left this year but I don't think I can hold it that long!

Best excuse you could ask for to
install a Lectra/San (CG certified Type I MSD that treats waste and discharges it overboard). Even if you could pump out, it's unlikely that the sewage treatment plants--which is where holding tank contents go--are working yet either...but even if they are, the discharge from a Lectra/San is far cleaner than the discharge from any sewage treatment plant. The Bay, except for two very small areas--Herring Bay and the norther coastal bays--is NOT "no discharg," making the Lectra/San a permanent solution--and a far more ecologically sound one than holding tanks even in normal conditions--to the problem of finding a working pumpout as well as all the issues of maintaining a holding tank. Annapolis Gerald W?
Did you check with the harbormaster in Annapolis re status of the Gerald W pumpout boat? Looked like it was running yesterday, Tues., when I was up there. Although Peggy's advice is the best, I usually head up to Annapolis every week or so and let them come out and do it ($5 plus a nice tip.) As I singlehand a lot, it's much easier for them to come to me. Let me know if you checked with them and have better info. Don

Annapolis too far
Peggy, I'll check out the Lectra/San solution. As for Annapolis guys, it's just too far to go for just a pump out. It would take me a whole day to get there and back. I'm hoping that the pump out situation will improve over the next week or so at the top of the bay. I do wish someone would start operating a "pump out boat" in my area. They could make a bundle. (Hmmmmm...)

Pump That Tank
Not sure about your situation however pump out facilities are not close to my boat either. I bought a 16 gallon shop vac at Home Depot, they make them larger, be selective. I pump my waste out with my shop vac use a dolly to transport it to an out side sewer clean out and dump it in. I also purchased a 25-gallon RV portable waste tank if I move my boat to an inland lake I can use it to carry the waste to a RV, dump. Necessity is the mother of invention, works for others and my boat at the club. Good Luck Jim
