Where to buy MPPT controller

I’m looking to buy a good quality 30 amp MPPT solar controller such as the Midnite Kid or TriStar 30. It seems that these products are only sold through smaller distributors specializing in solar products and not through larger, more mainstream sources. While I generally prefer to support smaller businesses when possible, I’ve found the retailers for Midnite and Morningstar products in their “Terms and Conditions” are requiring restocking fees ranging from 10-35% for non-defective product returns plus, as I interpret it, no reimbursement for the initial or return shipping fees if the product is defective and, basically, they are telling you to take it up with the manufacturer as a warranty claim if the product arrives DOA or dies within the first 30 days.

I understand these retailers are getting hammered on price competition (both among each other and from offshore – a Tracer 30 amp is less than $170 shipped from Amazon) and may not have the luxury of offering liberal return and shipping policies, but as a potential customer I find these policies very offputting. I’m sympathetic to the restocking fee, especially if I were to make a return of a working item without buying a replacement product from the same seller, although I really don’t expect to make a return if the controller works correctly. I’m much less sympathetic to the shipping and defective item return policies as I’m putting shipping costs plus my time to sort out something not my fault should things go wrong.

Does anyone know of a solar retailer with more flexible return policies? Or who has been willing to step up and make things right in spite of the exact wording of their return policy?

Buy from a local store. There has to be a solar supplier or marine/rv store in your area carrying solar products.

Shop on line

I shopped on line for my Charge controller and think it was a large suppler
from Arizona and they were very helpful with helping me pick the proper
controller.
I just can't remember which one but will look.

The Arizona supplier is among those with the terms of sale that make me uneasy. Unfortunately I’m not finding any authorized dealers with more liberal policies or within driving distance of my location.

Check with Amazon and see if they can get it for you under their warranty umbrella. Chief

Everything returned - either bad or because the customer picked the wrong thing goes into the same bin. It all goes through a long process of test (and some percent get electronic repair), cosmetic repair repacking to become refurbished and then likely has to be sold at a discount.

Seems only fair to pay for a restocking fee.. if you like to see those business still being around. Even at 30%, they are still losing on the deal.

There is no win on the business for ANY returned item. All they can do is minimize damages and the re-stocking fee helps. The biggest issue any on-line vendor faces is the idea of "free shipping".

There is NO FREE SHIPPING. Problem is customers think there is and vendors have done a huge disservice to themselves by making customers believe shipping is free. Not one single order ever leaves a vendor without Fed-Ex, UPS or USPS getting PAID. The shipping is built into the price of the product but "RETURN SHIPPING" is not.... If you find a place that will pay all shipping, including returns, the price of that is already built in. If you get lucky, and don't have a return, you've really already paid for it...

If you want to buy online, shipping is a fact of life. The vendor did not make the product and if it comes in damaged or does not work the shipping still needs to get paid for otherwise prices continue to rise for everyone. When I ship expensive items I offer shipping insurance to customers because I can not guarantee for shipping damages. About 1 in 20 take it, really unwise IMHO, but it is what it is.

If you dislike shipping issues with on-line then simply buy local. Unfortunately we can't have it all. We either get good old fashioned brick and mortar support or we go on-line and pay for shipping and get the lowest possible price. Margins are non-existent these days so no, shipping is not free, despite many incorrectly believing it is. Heck even the manufacturer does not pay for shipping the product to the retail vendor so even those costs are already built into the product at the retail level or wholesale level.

FWIW I have yet to have a DOA Morningstar or Midnite product.
