Where to buy a Stuffing Box

Hi. I've managed to BREAK the stuffing-box (packing gland) on my Ontario 32 and need to get a replacement. Who sells stuffing boxes, hopefully around here on the West Coast of Canada?

BTW: It has to be a traditional stuffing-box. There is not enough room for a dripless seal.

By the way, looking back at your original post, you put a link to the packing gland. Did you actually break the stuffing box or does it just need to be repacked? How did you break it?

Did you put one in your boat. My stuffing box is right below the cabinet face and impossible to get a wrench on her. I launched Tuesday and spent 2 hours trying to adjust it. I was thinking of making a set of 90° custom wrenches but was thinking of a dripless.

On a side note, I was down having a Fathers Day lunch at the Hingham Beer Works and stopped by Eastern Yacht Sales. Got a chance to board the C315 and C355. They did a really nice job with the new 5 series boats!

No, there is NOT enough room for a dripless seal. Trust me - I put one in my Catalina 36 and know how big they are.

(I didn't include the link - it just came on automatically when I mentioned packing gland)

Yes, I actually broke the "box". Under the "D'oooohhh!" heading... While Perf YS was fixing my rudder, I installed the solar panel on the back rail. I was inserting my working time around the other guy, so I didn't bother to "loom" the wire going from the solar panel past the engine.

Somehow, when running under power, the wire got caught on the shaft flange and wrapped itself around the shaft, stuffing box, etc. and managed to take a large portion of the air duct with it. By the time I discovered it, it was a mess of molten wire, plastic, and insulation wrapped tightly around the shaft. I'm guessing it wrapped around the stuffing box cap and forced it to turn with the shaft, breaking the threads. Now the cap turns freely and will not thread back onto the box.

At least it basically does not leak when at rest, so I can keep the boat in the water until I can get it replaced.

Not my boat but helped a friend put one on his Freedom.

If you have clearance for a stuffing box you can fit one of these or similar. They take less space than the PSS ones.

Yeah I do like a lot of the things about the new 5 series. You should have sent me a PM and came down for a beer.
