I am installing a ground plate on my H46 to be used as a ground plane for my SSB radio. My first reaction is to install the plate after the propellor and before the rudder right on the centerline. Where did you installed your ground plate? Chris

ground vs. counterpoise

Chris Dynaplates make effective grounds but poor counterpoise. If you intend it to function as the latter, the general principal is to install it as close to the antenna tuner as practical. If it's to function as a ground, it's irrelevent where it goes (underwater). Hope I'm not telling you what you already know.

Where to install not weather it works or not thanks........

My main concern is about drag, inmersed all the times and propellor wash/vibration (if installed after the propellor). Most installations that I have seen are off center. Chris

don't know how important location is

Guess I shouldn't have responded earlier. My visceral reaction is that drag is drag. I wonder how many people simply put it where it's most convenient and/or fits relatively flat against the hull/keel

... that with recent generation SSB's that he has found no difference between a ground plate and simply clamping the foil to a (bronze) through hull. That's through objective testing, and applies to newer units only. I'd sure try that first. RD

SSB ground

On my H460, I grounded the antenna tuner to the strut bolt under the aft starboard cabin bulk. The system works fine. On my last boat,H40.5, I ran about 50 feet of copper thru the boat as per prevailing opinion in 1994. I don't see any difference in performance. Gorden West seems to agree in his most articles on the subject.
