Well this 1987 Hunter 28.5 is our first yacht? I have sailed on and off for years and owned a couple of different boats. So i was not concerned that I could not find everything the excellent surveyer was talking about. I was trying to establish if this was a good boat (note final survey was like war & peace - 40 pages). Boat was good, paid my money and moved the boat from Annapolis to the Sasaffrass river without problem. The next weekend I start really learning all the lines, hayards, which seacock, etc. It is then I realized I could not find the water holding tank. I guess you fill this with a hose carried down into the cabin somewhere (there is no outside water connection) . Where the water holding tank is has me stumped (English cricket term) at the moment!!! I have tried to follow the hoses from the heater, but ??? Any pointers, maps, or directions will be appreciated. While I'm looking around the 2nd battery is also a mystery ... found one next to sink. Regards Mick mdriver@rcsw.com

Tank

The water tank is under the V-Berth and the water fill is at the bottom of the anchor locker. Pretty stupid place to put it. THe water pump should be under the forward starboard setee cushion. Don't try and remove the lid to the water tank to clean it. It is impossible to take up witout ruining the lid. Instead use one of those round acces panels. The standard battery is under the galley sink. The second one could be any where. Hunters only came with one battery so that may be the only one on board. Good luck with your new boat.

Water Tank

The water tank is under the V berth. Believe it or not, the fill is at the bottom of the anchor locker. Does not make alot of sense, but at least you will know that the anchor line is not tangled, since you need to take the line out everytime you want to fill the water tank. Good luck with the boat. I have an 86 28.5 and love it.

28.5 water

Jeff, guess you know by now where the water inlet is. Its not really that bad, I keep a 22# bruce in the locker with 300' of chain & line and I can get to the inlet without moving anything. Make sure as part of your maintenance you clean the screen filter that sits just forward of the water pump. There's also a drain cock on the heater which sits in front of the fuel tank under the starboard locker that you want to close. There's plenty of 28.5 owners out there so most requests get answered. tom, 87' 28.5

batteries not included

This model came stock with only one battery. I would definetly add another and dedicate one for starting and one for house bank. When I had my 28.5 I reloacted both batteries to the stbd. lazarette.

Starboard lazarette

Under sink and in starboard lazarette seems to be where most 2-battery systems are on 28.5s. I added a 3rd battery in the lazarette and use that bank as "house" and dedicate the one under sink as "starting" battery.

Battery placement and water tankage

I added an access port to my water tank; just cut a hole and screw and caulk it in place. Now I can fill my tank through the port if I don't want to go through the anchor locker and the tank gets cleaned twice a season. Two thoughts about batteries: if you replace flooded wet cells with AGM you can fit 2 100 Ah batteries on end in the well under the sink. AGM batteries work equally well no matter their orientation. Or, you can do as I did; put one battery in the well and a second on a shelf just above it. I have Trojan flooded batteries-105 + 130 Ah and with a bit of work and wiggling both fit. Good Luck Alan
