I have a hunter 19, I am still trying but still not in the water yet... In reading the manual it mentions a friction nut but gives no picture or explaination. In reading about boats my size on line it seems this nut has something to do with keeping the Rudder down. Otherwise, when underway the rudder will rise.
Where is the nut on the 19 or does the 19 have a nut? Any response would be very helpful. Dan:confused:

In what area of the manual are you looking at. This would definitely help us to help you. There are several areas to think of at first. The first being the mast bolt that secures the base of the mast to the deck mounted mast plate. The second may be on the rudder to secure or hold the rudder down. The third could be the wing nut that tightens down the washer on the water ballast tank underneath the step inside the cabin. These are possibilities that come to mind with emphasis on the rudder.

I think that this just refers to the wing nut on the port side that tightens to hold the rudder either up or down. You simply untighten it let it fall into the water when you are ready. Although there must be some trick to pulling it back up easily that I have not yet figured out.

There should be a large wing nut on port side of the rudder head, on the end of the axle around which the rudder blade pivots in the vertical plane. This is a friction nut to secure the rudder in the lowered position. To move the blade to other positions, loosen that wing nut.

There should be a piece of line attached at both ends to the rudder head. Pulling on one side of that line moves the rudder blade to the lowered position. Pulling on the other side of that line raises the rudder blade to about the half way position. To raise the blade to the full vertical position, use the rudder head line to get the blade halfway up. Then tie a loop in the end of a spare line and use your boat hook to place the loop over the outboard end of the rudder blade. You then can easily raise the blade to full vertical. You can secure the blade in the vertical position with the wing nut, or, to be more secure, leave the loop on the rudder blade and tie off the line.

Best wishes

Thank you guys for answering as you are correct on the rudder housing there is either a handle or a nut when tighten will keep the rudder up but do not count on that. Also use the uphaul line tied off to a cleat supplied generally on the tiller as a backup to keep the blade up. There use to be a supplied delrin pin that helped but they broke so often I told my customers to forget about it.
