I have a 2006 Hunter 33.

I suspect a fresh water leak and I read a post (can't find it anymore) wherein someone had traced their leak to a fixture in the fresh water tank. So ... what better place to start?

But I always thought the fresh water tank was under the seat in the V berth (see first photo) But when I look there it seems to be empty and inaccessible space! WHAT A WASTE!

So now I'm assuming the tank is behind the panelled off area above the legs of people sleeping in the V berth (see second photo) Am I correct? I'm embarrassed that I've not known this before as I've had the boat since new! What can I expect when I unscrew the bottom of this section?

Remove the v-berth cushions. Look under the access panels. Also in front of the v-berth get on your knees and look into the back of storage compartment under berth. You should see a cut off valve coming off of bottom of water tank. Also inspect the water heater connections. Question is your boat plumbed with pex plumbing. If so there should be a control valve register under the galley sink that allows you to cut off water to head, cockpit shower, gallery etc. for both hot and cold water supply. Check the water heater the pex fittings sometimes will get too hot on the hot water side of water heater and fail. Next or maybe first to thing to check for is the cockpit shower connections and control knobs not being completely turned off. I keep my cockpit shower valve turned off under galley sink because of this. I will only turn it on if I know I will be using the cockpit shower then it gets shut off.
My fresh water pump is located under galley sink so I installed a on off switch under sink just inside cabinet door. More convenient then breaker on nav panel. So I do not leave pump on 24/7. In fact last year finally I installed dock side water pressure. I installed the 35 psi pressure regular connection in anchor locker with filter. Dropped water line down to base of water tank. Cut into main water line after water tank valve. Install a tee with cut off for dock side water. Now I can fill water tank from dock side connection from below decks or shut off valve to water tank and open valve from dock for dockside water . Leaving water pump off and reducing where on pump. Just remember to turn off water at dock when leaving boat.

Yep, under the v-berth. You wil have to remove the screws holding down the access panels under the cushions to get at the tank itself. There is a shut-off valve that is accessable either through the front of the v-berth or the small access panels under the cushions at the front.

There is one line that goes direct from the valve to the water pump under the settee beside the hot water tank.

The plumbing is all push-in connectors so, quite possibly one has come loose somewhere along the line.

Is this the post that you were looking for?

Magne,

I had a problem with water showing up in the bilge from time to time and it took me until this spring to find the problem. My situation was fresh water by I also sail in fresh water.

To make a long story short, the problem was the fitting at the bottom of the fresh water tank was sitting on the bulkhead just behind the tank. It is accessible through the small storage closet under the v-berth just inside the front cabin. When the tank was full or when the tank was sufficiently full and sailing hard on a Port tack, the weight would press down on the fitting causing it to leak. I would then find water in the bilge.

I fixed the problem by cutting the bulkhead below the fitting to give it clearance. Since that repair, the bilge has been absolutely dry.

It's at least worth taking a look and making sure that there is clearance between the fitting and the bulkhead.

Good luck.

I'm the original poster.

OK tks - I'll investigate the tank based on your input.

BUT...

I'm still wondering what the heck is meant to be under the seat in the V-berth cabin. When I look into it through the (unused) cable hole to it from the storage under the forward dining settee, it seems to be completely empty. But, also, as far as I can see, it is inaccessible. What is it intended for? Has anybody tried to open it up and use it for storage?

Steve,

On the floor, as you enter the forward cabin, there are 2 access panels for the through hull sensors. Immediately in front of the access panels, on the vertical rise to the v-berth, there should be 2 doors. There is a storage area behind the doors. If you have AC there may be a duct there as well. The back of the storage area is the bulkhead that is immediately behind the water tank. There is a cutout near the bottom on the starboard side where you can access the fitting for the line that feeds the water pump. You may have to lay on the floor to see it.

I hope this explains it better.

BTW, the panel in your second picture, above the v-berth, gives you access to the underside of the anchor locker for windlass, wash-down pump etc. installation.
