Where do you store gasoline on a 33?

I would appreciate comments from other Hunter 33 (2004) owners as to where they store their gasoline for dinghy outboard motor and possibly small generator. The wet locker is a bit crowded and it drains to the bilge so it seems inappropriate to put gasoline cans there in case gasoline fumes find its way inside the boat. The anchor locker is a bit rough on gas cans and generator. I have dingy stored underneath the boom so there is no room around the base of the mast. Thanks, Oliver.

Whenever I store gas underway...

...I always store it in the dinghy. I only carry gas for the dinghy O/B anyway. But I don't see why you can't store a generator gas can there either. NEVER in an unvented locker or one that vents internally. Hint: Don't smoke if it's in the dinghy either. You never know where your butts will land.

Where is the Wet Locker on the 33?

Oliver, I have a 33 also. Not sure what the wet locker is? I also need to decide where to store my gas can. I was thinking of suspending it under the rear seats (in push pit), or sitting on the shelf below the helmsman seat. I would cover it with something to keep the direct sunlight off it to minimize expansion, etc. Michael

Gasoline storage

I call the locker on portside next to the helm the wet locker as that is where I put wet stuff like buckets, deck brush, boots. It drains to the bilge. I keep my dingy on deck flipped over and in front of the dodger. Generally don't like towing a dingy except for short trips. Therefore leaving the gas can in the dingy is not an attractive option for me. Also need a place to put the little generator as there is gasoline left in the tank there too.

Interested to find the answer too

Oliver, I have a portabote and fold it up on the lifelines (only 4" - yes 4") when folded flat. Right now I am a rower. Was thinking of a plastic can that I could tie across the swin ladder, but right now I am a happy rower

wet locker

By being next to the helm, are you referring to the smaller of the two lockers on the port side in the cockpit? The one above the fuel tank?

wet locker

I was thinking of the bigger one. I store my lines and second anchor in the smaller one aft. They both drain to the bilge so I don't want to have gasoline fumes in either of them. I am currently a rower with no outboard engine for the dingy because of this gasoline storage issue. The last time I chartered a sailboat the charter company put the gas can next to the swim ladder and tie a line from the can to the rails to prevent the can from falling in the water. This is a workable solution but clutters up the area there and can possibly be a vandalism issue. So I would like to know if there is a better way. My understanding is that the anchor locker and the propane bottle storage area are the only two spaces that are drained outside the boat.

Always on deck

From the stand point of the U.S. Navy damage control procedures, gasoline is ALWAYS stored on the weather deck. Since gasoline's flash point (point at which fumes will ignite) is lower than that of diesel, it wouldn't take a lot for you to have a really bad day because fumes in an enclosed locker got ignited by a small spark! I also have a small gasoline generator and my gas can stays tied to the deck where no fumes can accumulate.

Dingy

I use a watertender 9 hardshell dinghy, & a minn-kota trolling motor. have to charge the battery about every 2-3 weeks. Doesn't move as fast as an outboard but hey. I'm a sailor, not goin as fast as the next guy, I'm use to. Pray for Wind, lugeman
