Must Be Nice

Must be nice to be able to participate in this survey. In this area, the question is not about the marina being nice, or the marina being convenient, or do you like it. Big question in this area, is do you have a slip. Of any kind. Most marinas here were either severly damaged or destroyed in Katrina. Space is hard to find. I am one of the fortunate ones. I live on a canal, and although the house had 4' of water in it, there was basically no damage to the boat, which is tied up right behind my house. I have been back in the house for a year now, my boat is in good shape. Every day as I drive around this area I count my blessings.

I like the location, Long Beach, CA. Great views of the Queen Mary and the city skyline. I can leave my slip and have sails up in ten minutes, and there's a vast outer harbor behind a long breakwater to sail in flat water. Go out the gates and you're in the real ocean. The best daysailing on the whole West Coast, not counting the Bay Area. The docks were recently reconfigured and rebuilt to floating concrete, but...bird droppings are almost cast into the cement - even a wire brush won't get it off if it's already dried. There's no convenient dink storage. You'd think a brand new marina could have worked that into the plan somehow. I used to use a dink float, but the rebuild did away with that. They went to 50 amp service for the 40 ft docks. Had to buy an adapter. A lot of rules and regs, but it keeps the docks and fingers from becoming junk storage yards. Of course, the rates went up, but they're not too bad, ten bucks/change for forty feet. I've heard of worse. There's a lot of tourist traffic which can be annoying on summer weekends. There's no West Marina nearby, but the local hardware store stocks a lot marine items (which was my idea). It's a municipal marina and most of the staff haven't a clue about boats and don't seem to care because they're city employees. In this neck of the woods you have to take what you can get, but all in all, I like it.

Yes, My boat is kept at a Marina. I can't say I hate the Marina that I keep the boat, but there is no love-loss either. The Pioneer Inn and Marina was the gem on Lake Winnebago for many years. The P.O sold the Marina four years ago to a bunch of jag-offs. They had great plans to re-build the hotel, so they tore the thing down and planned to build a condo/hotel. They raised the buildings without ever getting the WDNR permits. In review of the abstract and deed it was easily found that this property was a man-made island placed over the lake bottom, which is public property. In the deed it was stated that the property had to be a single owner, there went the condos! So the property is a hole in the ground with noxious weeds. There are a 131 slips with now only 43 occupied. They have been sending me letters wondering where my deposit for the up-coming season is. There has been promices of a new Harborhouse and all new docking. Many, Many Lies. Some would ask why I stay there? Its the only game in town that has openings. So would I reccomend them, F^&k NO, would I if they made motion on there years of false promises, most defeniantly. Rob Hessenius

My boat is kept in a Marina in Oconto WI which is a short trip down the Oconto river off of Green Bay. The marina is Hi Seas Marina. It's a great marina to be a part of and is close to Door County and other tourist areas. They just purchased a new open ended travel lift for this season. It should save us a few bucks on a haul out.

My Marina

Yes Yes Yes My Marina is River Oaks Marina, Grand Island, New York. On the Niagara River. 12 minutes from my house by car and 4 minutes by dingy from the launch. The river is the best kept secret for day sailing, which we do everyday during the summer. (Retirement is GOOD) Al Duquette N30 s/v Mast Confusion Tonawanda, NY

Hey Rob

I looked into keeping my boat there last year and they were definately full of s$%t. I could see it a mile away. I hope that they go under and someone picks it up and does what they promise. It used to be a beautiful property when I was growing up. I remember going there to spend weekends in the pool and eating their great Sunday brunch. I sure hope that someone brings it back to life Dave

If we go with the majority it looks like Wisconson

is the place to dock your boat. However since I live in Maryland I just park it in the Susquehanna River almost as far up the Chesapeake as you can get at Owen's Marina. The rates are good, there is a bridge with 52 feet vertical clearance to keep out the big boats. The water is fresh although drift wood can be a problem. Services are adequate but not luxurious. There is a pool and his and hers bathrooms with showers. No laundry, fuel or dock hands. but we do have a free pump-out. Summer dockage and winter storage with haulout and spring launch and pressure wash is 2100 per year for my thirty foot boat. The breakwater isn't much but they promice to fix that someday.

I like my marina. I keep my boat in a slip. Easy access to the lake. A large protected harbor allows sailing when the big water is too lumpy. The boat owners at my dock are a fine, fun bunch of human beings.

Another opinion from paradise...

Is it in a Marina? Yes Do you like your Marina? Yes Would you recommend your Marina? Yes What is the name of your Marina? Shelter Bay, LaConner, WA. We pay $260/mo for a 42 foot slip (our boat is 44+ feet tip to tip), which includes water, but the 30amp shore power is extra. They have slips available for those interested. No live aboards allowed. A real pit

I keep my boat in Olcott, NY only because I like the Yacht Club there. There was one OK marina but it is $2400 a season and the town marina is only for boats through 30 ft. The other two marinas are pits - rickety, unsafe docks, filthy bathrooms, and virtually no maintenance. I am in one of those. The only plus is that the boat is well protected from storms. were are in a bit of a gorge, so we get good protection from strong winds, too. Olcott is unique, I will say that. A fire tore through a chunk of the business district and the local sentiment was pretty much that it was a good thing.

I am Irwin 32 from the sailnet board, which no longer loads onto my browser which is why I have not checked back there. Are you gearing up for your Welland trip this spring? Despite my post about facilities in Olcott, I do like this area and I love being minutes from the boat. Got afew sails out on Ontaio last season after my arrival.

Yes, yes and yes. My 37 ft boat is berthed at Marina Village on Alameda Island, almost directly across the estuary from Jack London Square and Oakland. A large, well-designed marina with floating concrete docks, ample width to the ways, a variety of slips, good marine support facilities nearby and great neighbors. In less than 30 minutes you can be off downtown San Francisco with Alcatraz to starboard. Perhaps the biggest plus is the weather: this is one of the few warm berthing places in and around San Francisco Bay. My previous marina was also nicely built, but was at the end of a wind tunnel known as the Slot where the cold wind blasts off the Pacific every summer afternoon. The staff is knowledgable (cruising experience, boat owners and bilingual) and friendly, and the bathrooms and showers are clean. When I start to grumble about the rates being high, and going up, I recall that five years ago I was paying more than 50% more in San Diego for a comparable slip. And great neighbors, and two yacht clubs with races (and bars and food) within one block. Pretty darned nice.

Why not!

Is it in a Marina? Yes Do you like your Marina? Yes Would you recommend your Marina? Yes What is the name of your Marina? Thunder Bay Marina. (North Shore, Lake Superior) So, When I first got to my new slip, I parked the boat and right away caught a ride back to the island to fetch my truck. About a half hour later, I returned with cleaning supplies and a dozen beers. One of my new dock mates wouldn’t let me on the dock until I gave him a beer, he also scolded me from only bringing 12. Evidently, this sort of temperance isn’t tolerated. Less than 20 minutes after that as I was scrubbing down the deck with the tunes on, another of my new dock mates arrived, opened up his boat, scowled at me, then yelled “Hey, what’s your problem man? Turn that damn stereo up!!” So, every time you’re doing something on your boat, somebody offers a hand or brings a cold drink. People call you over to help them out if you can, either on a project, or to deal with an over abundance of food or booze. The staff is really good, the “rules” are treated more as guidelines and there’s none of the weird animosity between the sailors and power boaters. 35 bucks a foot for the season, access to laundry and showers, good security, 6.50 to pumpout (usually, no waiting). Of course, shore power and water included. Fierce racing fleet! Ferg
