I'm looking to upgrade my ground tackle. I currently have 20 feet of 1/4" high test chain. I'd like to go to 50 feet and use the existing 20' for my secondary setup. WM offers the chain at $3.32 per foot. Are there other places I should look to get a good quality chain at a better price?

Yeah,,,,

But they'll price match. Whew. That's what I did. Sure beats driving a long ways to a place like Defender or Fisheries. Or paying the freight charge. *pop

price match

Just saw a notice at WM that the company has changed their policy - will only match price if advertized in a store - no more web site matching.

Forgot the link

If I remember right they only do half and whole barrels. Maybe you can get together with other's that need chain.

Quality Chain

Make sure you purchase "Made in the USA" quality chain.

If your looking to save a few bucks and you know..

If you know good chain from bad and your looking to save a few bucks you could check out a marine salvage yard. I was walking thru a salvage yard two weeks ago and tripped over all the chain laying around. 100's of anchors also. Try the yellow pages or the web to see if you have a local marine salvage yard. good luck, Jack

I bought 120' of 5/16 G4 from WM and they.....

price-matched Defender without hesitation. Now they had the stuff on sale and their sale price was still 15% higher than Defender's regular price. The chain I got was WM's own brand - stamped WM4 instead of G4. The manufacturer was ACCO- a good quality American manufacturer. WM claimed that it was the exact same stuff as G4, just stamped with their own logo. I hope I didn't make a mistake..... I suspect that the reason WM has their own brand stamped on the chain is so that they can claim that they "can't price-match" because it is not the same item. However, they didn't do that with me. Could be because it was a brand new WM store and they were hungry.....

West Marine Price Matching

Price matching HAS NOT changed at WM as stated by Don in R.I. What he probably is referring to is the policy on the Garmin Auto-navigation systems. WM is bound by contract with Garmin to hold prices. There are other vendors that have this as an agreement, i.e Bose. If you read the policy from WM you will find out that products DO NOT have to be the exact same, but comparable. So that kinda throws the MYTH into what WM4 vs. G4.

Lifting House

Look in the commercial yellow pages under "chain" for a "lifting" supply dealer in your area. They will be able to supply various grades, materials, and sizes to suite your needs. I picked up stainless steel chain and shackles for our mooring at a very reasonable price. As an alternative try McMaster-Carr.

WM matching prices

The change in policy I mentioned comes from an employee bulletin dated Oct 30. Not all stores are effected and it's also possible some stores are not yet adhering to the policy, however, it does exist, otherwise, I wouldn't have mentioned it...

Defender is hard to beat, even with some UPS. WM prices are often as much as 50% higher than Defender.

price matching is an insult....

...to the consumer. Just think about it for a moment. The giant, West Marine, blatantly overcharges for most of its merchandise...but graciously discounts their product if the consumer confronts them with a competitors' price. Yet, they still continue overcharging the gullible, uninformed segment of the marketplace. WM provides a lot of service and convenience to the boating community, but I choose not to reward them in this manner. I'd rather support the competition.

It may be an insult, but it is worth persuing.

Joe: I totally agree, but it is also worth persuing. Considering that you are probably looking at $50 (or more) for freight on 50# of chain it makes a big difference in the total purchase price. I purchased 50' of chain from WM they matched the price on 5/16" chain and I did not have to pay freight. If you go over a specified weight you will also need have it shipped as freight. Now we are looking a big bill. I very seldom purchase anything from WM that costs over $50 without price matching.
