Hello everyone, I am in the market for a used boat and have been looking at the 19 footers out there. I did notice that the Hunter 19 is no longer in production. Does anyone have any idea as to why? Did this boat just not do well? I have read the reviews from the owners and they all seem happy with the boat. Thanks

The Hunter 19...

We looked at the 19, and the 23.5. I actually liked the 19 better because its lighter and easier to singlehand, but my wife liked the additional room of the 23.5. They stopped the 19 due to slower sales. The 23.5 sold a lot more at a bigger profit margin.

I'd guess costs/profit

In the early 90s I seriously looked at both boats. I don't recall the prices but the prices of the two boats were closer than the size difference would indicate. I wanted a 19, but for 'a little bit more' I could buy the 23.5. If a person financed the boat purchase, the monthly payments between the two were close enough to step up to the 23.5. BTW, I ended up buying a H23 (wing keel). The owner was moving and couldn't take the boat so he priced it for a 'quick sale'. I kept that boat for 4 years.

'Crazy Dave' could answer better than I, but I'd guess the manufacturing costs of the H19 were at least 90% of the 23.5.

IIRC, only 600 or so 19s were built and a few thousand or the 23.5 (240)s were biult.

The 19 is a sweet boat.

Mike

you want to know

The cost to manufactur the Hunter 19 and 23.5 were very close and the cost to buy the 23.5 was not that much more. Further, I sold more 23.5 on a basis of 20 to 1 of the 19's. It was at a dealer meeting in 1996 or 1997 when this was brought up by Hunter on what to do as I was chairing that meeting. Warren Luhrs who owns Hunter asked me what I would do in front of everyone. I told everyone I would drop the 19 as I rarely sold one. The decision stuck.

I got one

I am the PROUD owner of a 1993 H19. I purchased it approx. 2 weeks ago. I am so excited to be back in a sail boat! After growing up with a suncoast 22' (Dad's boat) and enjoying my youth, and water time with Dad, my desires to enjoy the same memories with my kids were a must!! Dad eventually sold the old suncoast (around 1986) and we did without until my Grandpa gave dad his Oday 30' (1979 model). I had the best days of my life on these two boats, and as many of you can appreciate that love for sailing never leaves ya. Dad still has the Oday (though on dry dock/hull work since 1999). Since he wasnt sure when he was going to launch the old Oday, I ended up looking for something affordable and easy to maintian. I have always loved Hunter's,Catalinas,Island Packets, etc. and after about a month of reading and searching I found her, and as she sits in my back yard awaiting to take her out with the family I'm having fun cleaning her up and window shopping at West Marine.

Sorry about the story, but I am just excited to have a boat again, and to have one of the best trailerable brands on the market my Hunter 19 is awesome.
