Where can one buy propane flexible lines?

I'm looking to purchase propane low pressure line or hose by the foot with no fittings. All that I have been able to find come pre-cut and with threaded end fittings. Installing a propane stove on a friend's boat with all the safeguards and would like to run a single line with no joints from solenid switch to appliance with a run of about 10 ft. You used to be able to get it in any hardware store, but now nobody carries it. Thanks for your help.

Run copper for the most of the

run and hose for the ends.

for what its worth

Looking at doing the same myself. Can't stay far enough away from CU tubing. There is a gas supply company here in Seattle I understand that will make you the custom hoses (swage on the ends). They mainly do welding type things so you might try those places.

Stay away from solid copper tubing.

It'll probably be OK but solid copper isn't an option with wiring on a boat so why chance it with propane. Vibration is the problem. Propane in the tank is less than 100psi so pressure isn't the problem. It's exploding in your bilge that hurts. But that's rare. Happens more in homes than boats that I've seen. Now, that said, look in your phone book under 'Propane' or something similar. Ask those folks. My local suppliers make-up hose. So does our local RV dealer. Very common work.

Fred, You compared copper tubing

for fuel piping to solid copper for electrical service. Properly supported tubing will meet all safety requirements for gas fitting. With proper flare fittings and hose barbs and clamps the system will last forever. The problem with propane and houses is that the copper is run haphazardly from tank to appliance with no support or protection.

Dickinson

I just installed flex lines when I installed a propane heater. The absolutely best price for the hose was from Dickinson. West Marine sells a 20' high pressure propane line with brass compression fittings for $77.95. Dickinson sells the same thing for $27.95. Be sure and put chafe guards on the hose wherever it touches anything or goes through a bulkhead. Also it is a good idea to run the hose through PVC pipe inside lockers so that items in the locker do not chafe the hose.

Tauton Stove Company can make hoses

Tauton Stove Company can make custom hoses any size that you require. Rememeber to always leave enough extra hose to allow for stove movement.

Ross,

Unless your house is in a earthquake zone, it shouldn't vibrate much. If so, code might require one of those shut-off sensors. But in any case houses are not boats. Proper hose, properly installed is best.

Thanks for the responses.

Thanks again for the suggestions. There seems to be a lot of companies that will make the lines for you but I'm really looking for one that will sell hose by the foot so I can make my own. Liam's suggestion to run hose through a locker inside a PVC pipe to protect it, is a keeper. I remember when copper tubing was widely used but now I'm not even considering it. Do you know if they have passed a Federal Law against selling propane hose in bulk to a consumer?

Local propane contractor

I installed a Dickenson Newport stove last year. Had a local propane supplier, with a service department, make up the hoses w/fittings on the ends. Maybe a local would sell the hose, but IMHO you should have them swage the fittings. Make them a little long, you can always coil up the extra scope. Two hoses (also replaced the copper tubing to cook stove - one kink & you have a leak), one 30 to 35' and one 15-20' were ~$70.

check it

use a garden hose or airline to route it and determine actual length needed then after you are perfectly satisfied with the assembly, run that over and have a company build up the correct hose for you. Keep away from sharp bends, have all turns flow smoothly and have each end supported to keep stress off the fittings. Most places don't charge very much for assembling the line, with most it's included in the price and it's much better to have swaged fittings on them ken.

forgot

what I've done many times is to slip a length of garden hose or some other type of hose over the line in areas where it passes through high trafic areas, like if it passes through a locker slip the other hose over it to protect it from snags or dropped objects, started to think it was a waste of time till I removed a line I installed a few years ago and found the jacket to have quite a few slices in it, some that went through it and had corresponding nicks on the propane hose. ken
