I called w/m and defender and they are out of stock is there a place in the NY area that I can drive in and pick one off the shelf. I was thinking of putting two danforth ancors down on 20' of chain for the time being or posable make a ancor or ahook or some kind of cement ? I would like to move on this befor something happens to my boat and I would sleep better to. JohnOlson

Possible source

I bought a 200lb mushroom in the spring. I looked around and around and finally bought from West--they have a store close to where my mooring is so i didn't have to pay delivery.... Anyhow, when I received the mushroom I see it was made by Anne's Anchors, they are an outfit in Alabama or Arkansas (do a websearch). You can buy directly from them, but I don't know what your freight charges would be.... did West give you an idea of when they could get it? They "special ordered mine" and it came in not too long.

Use 3 Danforths not 2

Unless the wind / current in your area is only from two directions two danforths will not be very useful, but 3 danforths laid out at 60 degrees from each other leading to a central point that the main mooring chain is connected to is very very effective. In fact there is some evidence that this 3 point mooring system is more effective that the traditional huge mushroom. Hope this helps!

120 degrees.

Ok, I only moor a 23 foot boat. I am on the Leeward shore and have been through some nasty winds. My boat has held like a rock. The rode needs to break to have the boat come free. I set 3 danforth anchors 120 degrees from each other. The amount of chain I used from swivel shackle to each anchor is determined by the depth of water. (Using chain I used the 5/1 ratio. That included the length of chain required to run from the swivel to the base of the mooring ball.) I have done this for two season now without any anchors sliding. I do have to take out each seasons end and I have found that by the end of the season those anchors are really buried. I do set each anchor by using boat with motor to set each anchor individually. Best of luck.

I wanted to put the danforth ancors down to hold

So it stops the mushroom from bounceing around and slideing how big do you think the anchors should be? There is about 12" of soft mud and then hard clay under it.

Try Trader John on City Island NY. . .

Chances are you can find a used mushroom there. Chris s/v TideSong

No cost mooring

Years ago when I still had a mooring,It was 2 old V8 motor blocks chained together in 9feet of water,We had some 65mph wind and big stuff ,but it never moved, and all 4 around me did,one hung up on my boat so it held both 30' sailboats! cost was $0 for old blocks

How are going to put this into the water?

There is something missing here. Generally three hundred pound mushroom anchors require some reasonably heavy duty means by which they are hoisted onto a vessel. From there they must be hoisted off the vessel onto a selected area under many feet of water. Not to mention copious amounts of heavy chain, an anchor ball, pennents, and probably a pick up stick as well. While this could be a a do-it yourself project, my best judgement leads me to beleive that you should really have a professional mooring person install your 300 pound mushroom for you. I live in the New York metropolitan area too and am well aware of the exceptionally high cost of such a mooring installation. However, I really don't think you have much of a choice, unless you already have the equipment to do this yourself. And if you already have this equipment, then I am sure you could make a friend in the mooring business who may be able to provide you with a 300 pound mushroom anchor in exchange for some work on your part.

I thought I would just

row the ancor out In a dinghy with the chain and apickup rope and throw it in the water.

We have no gear but

I think I can flip it off the back of a dinghy and Get the chain with a pick up line or I thought I would throw the ancor in the water at the end of a dock and then pick it up with the frount of my boat and moter out and set it.What do you guys think of these plans ?

Hay guys

Other factors

Assuming that this thread is serious ... Better first check with the local Harbormaster where you intend to dump this monster. Much cheaper than being told to remove it afterward. Most towns have mooring rules, particularly with regard to permits, and the annual servicing of the chains, floats, pendants, etc. Other than approved moorings, anything else can be considered by the USCG and other enforcement folks as "illegal dumping" with potentially high penalties. Also, check your insurance policy. It might stipulate certain standards for permanent mooring/dockage with regard to liability if the thing breaks loose. --RonD

Yes Im serious

I am in a lake and Im in a privet dock area there is no harber master there is no harber the man I rented this morring from is very stuborn and insistis that a 300lb mushroom is heavey enough and that there is enough room around the boats for swing but in about 15 Kts of wind I can reach off the back of my boat and touch the boat behind me. and I am in 10' of water and have about 15' of chain and 12' 5/8 nylon rope there is about 12" of soft mud and then clay under it the ancor cant sink in and grab The problem is that this man has got my C30 in a25' boat spot.I am thinking of pulling the boat out for the season befor I have more problems. There are no morrings left on the lake and I though I was lucky to get this one.
