Help, I've got this O'Day day sailer with a broken mast. Is there any kind of mast that will work. A new one costs more than five times what I paid for this boat. I also need a rudder, but I can probably make one easy enough. Dentiny Mann

Mast

I don't know how much you want to spend on your mast, but if it were me I would go to the link below and look at there stock. There DM-1 would probably work for you. You said you have a broken mast? You may be able to repair that one also. Good luck and God Bless Brian

Make One

You can make a mast pretty easily. First rip some straight clear sections of wood to the width you need. Next orient the grains randomly for added strength and glue the sections together with west epoxy and some clamps. Once cured it should now be a square shape. Draw a line on each face one third of the way across the width and down the entire length. Repeat on the other side so you have two lines on each face. Then take a block plane and plan each corner until you hit the lines. The mast should now be eight sided. Repeat this process of planing the sharp corners and the mast will soon be round. Take a belt from a belt sander and like shining shoes sand it smooth. Coat the entire mast with West Epoxy or similar waterproofing material. Good luck. Dave
