Only if you allow her to ruin your life! I got rid of the wife when she wanted me to sell the boat. It's probably the only thing I'll have left when all is said and done, but I'll be happy!!!!!!!!
Another tack
The process began for me when the wife saw a Catalina 42 on our last cruise. I thought our 350 was big enough, but sometimes you just have to go along. The 350 is sitting at our broker's dock now and the 42 is due to come out of the factory at the end of this month.

Does it really ever end?
On the surface, the maintainance and upgrades are steps leading towards the inevitable. Now, if the woman in your life doesn't embrace the habit with the enthusiasm you do then it might actually begin the day you tell her you're going to look at a boat. If she is a kindred spirit, then it happened the day she stepped aboard a dockmates boat with standing headroom, a functioning galley, and AC. Where'd I put that "FOR SALE" sign.

Never, ever calculate the per use cost of a boat. It is not that kind of thing. We got ready to sell our boat when the Admiral realized I wanted a bigger boat and we could go cruising. I want her to be happy. She wants me to be happy. That is what a marriage is about. When I read some of these posts I feel very lucky!

Make sure that you get the boat
If the woman in your life wants to take away your boat then a divorce is not far behind. Next she'll suggest that if you were neutered that you would be more relaxed and easier to talk to. So do you want the boat to be part of the divorce settlement??? You know that she will get the house and the kids. If she sells the boat that money will be spent by her to hire her lawyer. If a couple can't be happy together sailing around they can't be happy together anywhere. Seriously if you can't be happy together relaxed on the boat just where could you be happy with her?? My wife and I really have enjoyed our time sailing together. Nothing like running a boat to promote teamwork. One at the helm one at the winches. One pulling up anchors the other making great meals. And the beauty of sailing together is that you don't have other people in the mix. If you can't get romantic on a starry night at a remote anchorage romance is probably dead in your marriage. Nothing like snuggling up to the wife on a crisp fall evening with rain on the roof.

Im hoping to stall for a few months
when it cools off a little and we feel the heel again,,,a change allways comes over the decision. but unfortunatly its always in the back of the mind.....I NEVER do that calculation either its what happened to my first boat a C&C 28,,,,,sure death to boat ownership..back then..I traveled ALOT,,,take the cost of ownership Divide by how many times you use it...and walla,,,,boats for sale!

Moonsailer, dont get the wrong idea
My wife Loves to sail....and we have had wonderful and yes romantic days and nights on board,,,hey SHE is the one thats always trying to burry the Rail!!!....Im the one thats a little more up tight,,,or shall we say cautious,,,Ive been on a boat while it demasted,,,Ive been struck by lightning,,,,Ive seen smoke billowing from the compainionway,,,,Ive seen a lifeline snap and a crew member go overboard....But Ive also sailed on full moon lite night with a perfect 10 knot breeze on a crisp October evening,,,,or enjoyed the spray over the bow on a blustery summers day......Its not the sailing,,,,Unfortunatly what becomes the instigating factor in the sale of most boats is either the financial aspect ,,Slip/storage fees, operational costs, ect,,,Or a Family getting along on a small moving island,,, Or moving up or down to a new boat.....Or a social change....( Our Marina has had a number of our friends leave for all various reasons so the social dynamics have changed).....and IF we sell the boat soon...and I am saying IF,,,it will most likely be a cause of all the reasons Ive mentioned.....and If we sell,,,we wont be out of sailing,,,we have a Rhodes 19 thats a great day sailor boat, and will most likely keep the RIB with 15hp thats a real fun ride with the kids..... Just to openly state I have a great Wife and Partner that Loves to sail.... So No ,,,no divorce in My future....been there, Done That,,,,and dont want to do that again....

Are in the same boat as the Duckman. She loves to sail because I love to sail. Sometimes we fight(not really) over who gets to drive. When I wanted a folding wheel, the radar died and wanted a new one and the backstay adjuster needed replacement she said "Hey, it's only money...we can make more!" I have my projects for the boat and she has hers. Some of hers include keeping the interior well oiled and clean. Right now we are working together on sewing new curtains. She does admit that without me she would probably not sail. One, she feels safe with me; she will not sail with her father. Two, she loves to see me happy and relaxed. Tim R.

For me it begins
before I buy it. Everything I own is for sale. Once I have it and play with it, I'm looking to move on to the next new (to me) item. Did the same with my house and the same with my vehicles. Even the old hot rods and motorcycles. No I won't sell the 58 Pan. I'm always looking to for something differant. Thats why I'll never own a Hunter or a Catalina. I try not to get emotionally attached to anything I own. After all its only a material object. Anything can be had, if you really want it. New experience is the fruit of life for me.I'll try anything once, twice, if I like it. Keep it up, Ctskip

Once i put down the initial investment (slip and transporting the boat 350 miles to the slip near my college apartment) I see the boat as a free weekend activity, every weekend that I can! I'll leave friday afternoon, return sunday evening, and beyond food and the occasional bottle of wine I burn maybe $5 worth of gasoline. Definitly worth it..that being said, I'm with ctskip. Its always for sale (sort of), because (As we all know) time is money, and if someone wants tobuy it for twice what I paid for it, all power to them. I don't make that much and I would see it as an opportunity to take a month off from working, buy a new boat, and cruise for the next 30 days.
