Ok, anyone ever put a wheel steering on a mac 26s?
My wife wants to do this, I would be happy with it too. but how.

i have seen it done. it takes up most of the room in the lazarette, and is not cheap or simple.

I think defender sells a kit for around a grand.

steering response is slower, but you do gain some room. (until you anchor.)

-why exactally do you want a wheel? have you sailed on a small boat w/ a wheel?

-normally a wheel is used when the forces require it. (too hard to hold).

I would NOT recommend it.

I concur with MrBill. I have an X with the wheel. It is a pain in the posterior. Response is not so bad, but there is very little feedback. Plus it is ALWAYS in the way. With a tiller you can raise it when not in use, giving much needed living space.

Where the wheel is worthwhile is that it provides a pedestal for the nav instruments, the table, and the engine controls. It is required when operating as a motor boat. The 50 HP would be a handful without the wheel.

I can't imagine anyone wanting a wheel that didn't need one. I much prefer sitting on the windward side with a tiller in my hand. The visibility stinks behind the wheel too.

I agree with everyone above. You get a better feel for the boat when sailing, the tiller isn't that long so it's not much in the way even when you're sailing, and it's totally out of the way when at the dock and at anchor. A lot of the options on these boats have good arguments either way but in my opinion, this isn't one of them.
