I have a 1980 Catalina 30 with an Atomic 4. Under power I get a vibration only in the wheel. I've had the cutlass bearing checked and dont have a lot of play in the rudder. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Propellor

Sea. My first initial response is the prop. Maybe a chip, slight bend, not true, etc, but I would think if the vibration is broadcasting through the wheel then the propwash is passing the rudder and hence your feeling it in the wheel via the steering geer. Check out the prop if you can. Thats my two cents. Bob 30 Catalina '88

Good Vibrations

Good Vibrations (fun Beach Boys song) Are these new vibrations that you are experiencing, or have they always been there and you are just now asking questions about them? If they have always been there, what kind of prop do you have? Two blade, three blade, etc.? From what I hear, two bladed prop - while less of a drag on sailing performance, is more prone to vibration than three blades. If the vibrations came about recently, then look for something that changed on the boat - did you tag something with the prop - causing it to become out of balance? Did you make adjustments to the rig tensions or engine alignment? If maybe they came about slowly and you are just now noticing, is there growth on the prop (barnacles?) What kind of zinc do you have? prop cone, shaft, etc. What is it's condition? Was it recently changed? Just throwing out suggestions to help pinpoint what might have changed to cause (not so) Good Vibrations. Fun, Fun, Fun ('till daddy takes the tiller away). Tim Brogan April IV C350 #68 Seattle

Propwash over the rudder

The vibration in the wheel is probably caused by the surge of thrust from each blade of the propellor as it strikes the rudder and causes it to deflect slightly. The vibration in the wheel is the deflection being transfered through the steering linkage to the wheel.
