I have a 1990 H27 outboard model with tiller steering. Has anyone tried to modify and change to wheel steering as with the inboard model? Is it possible? I know some might say "why" but just wondering.

Sure, anything is possible, but 'why'? It's gonna be expensive and a good deal of work. Where's the gain?

Tom, I have wheel steering 'cause that's the way the boat was built. Frankly, I would prefer a tiller but I'm not willing to go through what would be needed to convert.

I have located the "kit" from Edson to do the conversion, but still wondering if anyone out there has attempted it?

Alan, let me extend an apology as my earlier post sounds a bit abrupt. That's very interesting that you prefer tiller steering. I had a tiller on my Catalina 22 and did enjoy it, but I couldn't lean back and relax without using a tiller extender, and of course there was no convenient way to hold it in place while I went forward to raise the sails. It did have a wonderful feel to it though and I did enjoy that. The wheel isn't quite the same. For me the gain is the trade off to be able to easily lock the rudder while I go forward to raise the sails, etc. I do like the wheel and I wouldn't go back to a tiller, yet I do miss it and the pure feeling of it, if that makes any sense.
Jerry, I apologize for hijacking the thread. I haven't done a conversion. I understand that there are kits out there or simply a "tiller tamer" method of using a line to secure the tiller so that singlehanding can be more easily accomplished. I know there are 27s with wheel steering, but I don't have info on conversions. Best wishes should you decide to leap.

Tom, I hear exactly what you are saying. I have an auto pilot on my helm and when off cruising it is for sure easier to turn the helm over to it and go do other things. But for pure sailing enjoyment and feel of the boat a tiller can't be beat. In race mode give me a tiller any time, but when out with friends and family the wheel makes life aboard much easier.

Jerry, if you've found the kit and have the time and inclination to do it, go for it, it sounds like you're sold on it.

I still need some advice hopefully from someone who has done it. The problem is the 27 outboard model has a flip up compartment in the cockpit where the outboard gas tank sits, right at the spot where a wheel pedestal should go. A little tricky!
